I'll keep this short and simple and serious replies only.

I had a tax firm do my taxes last year. Personal taxes and taxes for my LLC. They just dropped a $2800 bill in my lap. Seems a bit high. Lots of small little charges for answering emails etc...

Is there anyway I can fight this? Is this normal? My taxes weren't all that complicated just regular stuff for the consulting work I do.

I'll be going to H&R block this year regardless.

Thanks in advance.

I'd request to move this topic to the Money Talk board. Good luck.

Serious reply.

If you are dumb enough to think that some random person on the internet can determine an answer to this question based on the information you provided then you are too dumb to do your own taxes. Use the CPA.

If you were charged $2800, your situation is much more complex than you believe it is. If there are lots of little charges for questions, that means there were lots of questions, i.e. more complex than you think.

If you own an LLC, please do not go to H&R block. If you want to find something cheaper, find a smaller firm or a sole CPA to work with.

I would imagine your financial books may not be as good as shape as you think they are. Regardless, though, they should have given you an idea of the fee.

Ok thanks guys. I guess I will just not pay them. Screw them, they treat me like a dairy cow just milking me for every penny they can. Taxes are already filed anyways.

It wasn't complicated taxes. Feel like they took advantage of me. Didn't save me any money as well. frick

No one can answer this question without knowing the specifics of your return.

If you were just a W-2 employee, with some house interest and charitable contribution deductions, then $2800 would be excessive.

But, there could be many little things that you don't think are a big deal which could be -- especially when dealing with an LLC.

Yeah I would not do that. CPA firms know collection agencies.

Call them up, calmly ask them for an explanation for the bill, and ask if they will consider a courtsey discount.

Did you sign an engagement letter? Were you aware of their hourly rates? Did they give you any kind of a quote?

did you bug the hell out of them, not respond to emails, force them to do bookkeeping for you, force them to go through a million records to get totals?

If so, then it is appropriate.

If you were very organized, timely, and answered all questions quickly when asked, then yes, it may be too high but I'd have to look at the return and see how complicated it is.

Hard to say. My accountant prepared three state returns, one federal return, and keeps track and pays the quarterly employment tax for my nanny. He answers all my emails and phone calls without hesitation. I paid about $800 in accountant fees last year and I live in NYC.

I've got my income, the wife's income, two small businesses, and some rental property, and some O&G interests, you could use the same template every year and just change a few numbers, I always pay about $500-800 every year, fluctuation is for amended returns and changing firms

I can't even count the number of first year clients I've had, who are business owners, who meet with me and tell me their records are in great shape... and then drop off a stack of unopened bank statements and a copy of their checkbook register and say that's their records, aren't they in great shape!

But again... when this happens, I estimate my fee, which is on the high side, and explain how I charge and when I charge and I have them sign an engagement letter spelling everything out. That way in the end, there are no surprises. And... if it's even worse than I thought, I call the client and explain to them the problems before I proceed.
