I'm not looking for a job and I don't need to drum up business. I've looked around on there and it seems pretty lame. Why should I have a profile?

I do hate what it's turning into though.

recruiter's playground and a mini-fb feed. I really hate seeing political articles on my LI timeline.

If you don't need a job or business I really can't see any other reason for it to be honest

I've had at least 6-7 recruiters reach out to me to see if I was interested in new job. Companies like Google and Amazon. This is when I wasn't even looking for a job.

Plus it shows potential employers you are serious about your career because you want to stay connected with a network of people. My two cents.

I am my own employer and the people that need to know who I am know who I am and where/how to find me.

I found my current job several years ago through a recruiter on linked in.

I'm also not looking for a job right now. But by keeping my profile updated, in 4 years I've "Connected" with dozens of recruiters that sent me invitations.

The day I decide I want to test the waters, I can have dozens of recruiters circling my resume and sharing job descriptions with me.

I use it to stay in touch with people I meet via work. As a consultant I find it very helpful for business relationships. We also need a few new consultants at work so last night I went through my contacts and reached out to a few from other organizations. It isn't something I use daily but is helpful.

I don't even have an account and have gotten invites from people I don't know. Ended up marking LinkedIn emails as spam on my three main email accounts

I've gotten legit job offer (interviews) requests from IBM, att, and apple this year from it, I almost took the IBM position but it required moving back to BR and I'm not doing that.

That was all this year, I find that linkedin can be a valuable resource for networking and keeping up with past co-workers, employers, and future opportunities. I think it allows the resume submission process to happen before you even apply for a job and recruiters are out there looking.

The first thing a company is going to do when you apply at a position is google your name, and if you have a linked in account it will be one of the first results. It can go a long way having that come up rather than just your facebook or twitter page posting pictures of your cat.

Face to face networking almost always trumps e-networking for most career fields.

Join organizations in your community. Try to sit on boards of organizations that touch your business field in some sort of way. Attend chamber meetings. etc.
