I just received a 2017 tax bill in the mail for my house and it says it's due by the end of January. I always thought I paid at the end of the year, not the beginning. Does anyone know if Orleans parish pays in advance or at the end of the year? I should know this considering I've been a homeowner here for 3 years but it always just gets deducted out of my escrow account so I don't ever deal with it. TIA

Lenders usually pay it in mid December if escrowed

Yep.

The wife always calls to double check this and I laugh.

Anyone else find it disturbing that you never actually own your house? The government is always ready to come take it if you don't pay them.

You pay in advance.

When you sell your home, you get the money back at closing based on what part of the year you sell.

Yea it looks like my rental place had the tax come out of the escrow account in December but the loan I have on my current home has yet to come out. And here I was getting excited when I saw I still had a good chunk of money in that escrow account. Damnit that shite is depressing!

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City announced that 2014 property tax bill images are available on the City’s website and paper bills are being mailed to all Orleans Parish property owners beginning today, December 26, 2013. Property tax payments are due on Friday, January 31, 2014.

Orleans is bad with its finances so it needs its money in advance. I think I could balance that budget within 4 years. Way too much bloat in that organization. They need to just go bankrupt and start from scratch without pensions.

Did millage rate decrease? My brother's place had same assessment as last year but he had a lower tax bill.

Plus Orleans parish doesn't update their website to reflect payments for months, so save that electronic receipt for your payment and don't worry it didn't get paid.

Same here. Apparently the S&WB millage went down. I guess all the sewer lines are fixed now so they don't need the money anymore.
