Blue Buffalo Wilderness is what our dogs eat. Good stuff, readily available at pet smart and not quite as expensive as Orijen.

If you've got a good source for Orijen, I highly recommend it as the best. I raised my hunting dog on their Large Puppy for the first 12-16 months. I then transitioned her to Regional Red and I couldn't be happier with her performance and looks. As was said, super premium Orijen requires less volume per feeding than most others. I will never feed anything else.

My 93lb FEMALE begs to differ.

But supposedly they eat less of it so the bag last longer, about 6 weeks for a 15lb bag.

Only 15lbs for 6 weeks? Damn, poor dog.

Eta: didn't see puppy

I DO judge science diet buyers because it's the price of high end food and the ingredients of Iams.

+1

I've fed my dog (now a 75 lb male German Shepherd at almost 2 years) orijen large breed puppy almost exclusively, and the times he's had other foods he's reacted poorly to them with either GI issues or skin outbreaks. I did a great deal of research before picking that one based on calcium levels recommended for feeding during growth phases in much of the vet literature.

Based on my reading, is also strongly recommend Merrick or Blue Buffalo. Everything else in my book is just Iams/Costco/Eukanuba. Hill's Science Diet is the most brilliantly conceived marketing deception out there. That crap is mostly corn and meat/bone meal--total rip off.

Well I bought his first bag of Orijen Puppy from Jefferson feed today. I mixed it in with his regular food as directed and I've never seen him eat dry food so enthusiastically before. He ate it like it was wet food. After he was done he sniffed by the bag and kept looking back at me for more. I'll update those interested on how his coat, bowl movements, itching etc react over the next couple weeks.

Just switched our Brittany to Merrick and got the same reaction. She's 8 months, and we just thought she wasn't all that enthusiastic about food. Apparently she just didn't like Wellness.

Look at acana if you want to save a little money. I feed my two shepherds that. Made by champion foods who makes orijen. Tried to feed mine the orijen red meat formula but they didn't like it to much, maybe to rich. But they eat the hell out of the acana ranchlands and pacifica.
