Timing is everything.

Seriously though. I spent years on poker and then one morning it was just taken away. Since Black Friday, the poker landscape isn't the same. Online for Americans is too small of a player pool and anyone still playing takes it fairly seriously. Even the live scene is tougher now. It's still full of bad players but even the bad players are good enough not to hemorrhage money away like they did 5-8 years ago. If you were starting in 2008, you wouldn't be at a disadvantage because the influx of new players was so great that you could hide in the player pool and learn at your own pace. Everyday 100s of new players were being introduced to the player pool. Now it's the same people everyday. By starting out knowing nothing, you are at a huge disadvantage that never existed before now.

Was 2007 the peak? Seemed like you had online poker as recent as 2010

The peak was from 2003 to around 2007 or 2008. The games got harder around 09 but nothing close to how they are now.

A few years previous to 07 was the big boom for poker because of a no-name winning the main event. That's when poker blew up.

You started to get a lot of newbs trying their hand at being a professional poker player while never really being serious enough. The result was a lot of easy money for good players.

It was easy money up until online poker was banned in the US.

PokerStars is good for learning the basics, betting structures, etc, and it's free, but like others have said, when it's not real money, people play like complete fricking retards. Strategy wise, go on YouTube and look up WSOP Academy. Lots of good tips from those videos.

That's not true. You had to be pretty damn good and put in a lot time to be even a modest winner long term from 09-11.

Son those $20 sit and go's on PartyPoker were some of the easiest money I've ever made.
