Geez. I couldn't imagine doing it myself. I'm beating myself up over whether or not to dig up my last dog. My mother is selling the property and it will be used for commercial purposes next. Unsure of whether or not to move him.

Did you shoot it? How the hell are y'all putting your own dogs down?

I agree, dogs know when it is time. I had another "mutt" growing up and he was getting to where he couldn't walk. Fed and petted him before I left for school. Came home and couldn't find him. He had walked into the woods to the very first tree where he treed a squirrel as a puppy. Died at that very spot.

Years ago I had to put one of mine down. Normally I could have never done it but he was so badly injured it would have been inhumane to take him to a vet. That was a bad day.

So sorry about the loss of Avery. I have had labs and they are such amazing animals and they truly are part of the family. Sounds like Avery was very much loved and had a good long life with you.

Sorry to hear that bro. Loyal pets are tough to let go, especially dogs. I had to put down and bury all my dogs too. Been over a decade now and I still haven't gotten another one.

At least he isn't hurting anymore. Quick and painless. He knows you were a good master

The only problem with dogs is that they just don't live as long as we do...sorry for your loss, man.

Because they're your dog. You are their master and they are your faithful companion. You raise them.
You care for them.
You bond with them.
And when they have lost quality of life it's your duty to see them to the other side.

Some people choose to pay a stranger to do it, and that's their prerogative. But there's no shame or guilt in doing it by your own hand.

His question was likely the method, not the rationale.

Edit: or maybe not, guess that could be read both ways.

Woke up to our family lab not getting up, just laying beside her bowl, struggling to breathe. She was 15 yrs old and we knew this day was coming. Didn't want her to suffer so I had to put her down myself. Rest peacefully Avery!

One of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. Almost a year ago our 14 year old Boston Terrier quit eating and drinking and just looked completely lost. We still miss him badly.

Sorry for your loss man. Ive had 2 pass away over the years and its a terrible feeling. We have a 5 year old lab now and when he goes my kids will be affected as well, which will make it worse. Like what was said above, its a shame they cant live as long as we do.

Man that really sucks. I've had to do it myself before. We have two labs.

Having been through this as well, i can tell you that nothing will help but some time. Go sit in the back yard with your favorite beverage, and sit quietly this evening. I sat back and thought about all of the fun she had retrieving countless ducks. Even a few bets she won for me in the blind. Remember the good.

Only selfish people would make a loyal freind suffer because he/she is afraid to do the right thing. You did the right thing. This is just the crappy part of the cycle of life.

Sorry man, but I know how you feel. I've had to take family pets to be put down. The hardest part of course are the kids being upset.
