13 year old lab. I have noticed as she has gotten older that she wants to shadow me everywhere in the house. Walk into a room, she walks in etc.

I find it endearing but wondered if this is normal for elderly dogs? Just curious.

I find this normal for dogs, period. They want to be with the people they love. They want to protect them, love them, and get attention from them. It's natural good dog behavior.

My parents' dog is 12, but it's been shadowing my old man for 6 years at least. She just wants to be where her family is.

Yes. She may be starting to have vision or hearing problems or just starting to feel old in general. If you're not a piece of shite dog owner their first instinct is to cling to the pack leader for protection.

Reminds me of my old lab. He would walk with me everywhere and want to "hold my hand"... he'd reach up and grab my hand with his mouth and walk with me.

I had a golden retreiver that always wanted to shadow me.

When he was close to the end, he suddenly wanted to be in the back yard. It's like he knew his time was near and he wanted to spare me from seeing it.

He was the best dog I've ever owned, still miss him.

My dog isn't especially old and does this at times. He just blindly follows me around. I can turn around in the middle of the room and so does he. Never thought anything of it. When I sit, he sits. A lot of times when he sees I'm settled then he'll go off and do what he wants to.

I wear the pants in my house, but my dog follows my wife

She seems healthy. At least her tail is always wagging.

Eyes and ears could be aging like mentioned above. No cataracts but her eyes are 'silvering' with age.

My dog does this from time to time. When it gets a bit too much (ex: if I am doing something like dusting and she has to be within a foot of me no matter where in the room I am) I break her of it by telling her to get in her bed then telling her to stay (she knows both commands and is very obedient).

Hell, I have a King Charles. His feelings get hurt if he can't follow me every where in the house.

Your dog has "protected" you for all of these years. Now she is looking for protection from you.

my beagle did this for a long time, but when it actually got time she would fall so hard asleep that she wouldn't wake when I changed rooms.

my cat does this too, and always has.

My lab will follow me no matter where I go in the house. If I go to the bathroom, he'll cry at the door if I shut it. He's six and a half.

my goldendoodle does this, he's not two years old yet. if i'm wandering the house, he'll try to hold his head against the outside of my leg as i walk.

there's a reason dogs are man's best friend and cats are just cohabitants.
