Offshoot topic: Do social media and camera/video phones imperil social order?

CAVEAT: I am not in any way justifying what those dumbass SAEs did at OU.
I think we could all come up with at least 5 quick examples of how someone's life was fricked because of something they tweeted, Facebooked, snapchatted, youtubed, or sent as an attachment to an email/text (or something that was sent about them). In a lot of cases, it's an unwise decision that comes back to haunt (revenge porn posting, dick picks [Anthony Weiner]). But in some cases, it's some unsavory shite (racist tweets, OU dumbasses).
Using the OU case as an example, before video phones and youtube, this either never would have come to light, or, at best, it would have been a rumored occurrence which would be confined to OU/Norman. Now, it has instantly become a national firestorm, ruining the lives of a lot of people (whether this is "just" is not relevant to this discussion).
My question is: Is the ability to easily record, document and transmit almost anything instantaneously destabilizing society?

The argument could be made that it brings more stability to society by outing and/or destroying fringe elements

Destabilizing? Not sure, but it's an interesting topic. I do think the lack of privacy in a quasi-public setting is unsettling.

Presidential campaign ads are gonna be hella interesting in a couple decades

THIS is a subject worthy of the OT and I have thought about it quite a bit. Like every time I see someone getting blasted for doing something that got videoed when I think "damn, I have done that plenty of times"...
It always brings me back to a guy I once heard say: "Think about how our society would change if we had a red light mounted in our forehead that blinked every time we told a lie." Think about that one for a minute.

Certainly.
But you would think people would stop doing dumb shite in public knowing there are street cameras/ security cameras on every corner & cell phone cameras in everyone's hand.

I actually kind of like it and think it is actually stabilizing. For the most part it lessens the likelihood that people are going to act in some kind of ridiculous manner.
For example, I think cops are going to start thinking about their interactions with the public more given they are likely to be videoed at all times.
On the flip side, I don't like the loss of privacy. Things can get taken out of context in a hurry if you are just joking or having fun. Those "you had to be there" moments usually don't portray well in a snapped pic or soundbite.

Anyone born after 2000 will never NOT be recorded. Think about that for a bit. Almost Everything they do and say will be on record. Scary.

It's really disappointing. I don't see near as many girls flashing their boobs as in years past..

It is unfortunate that a young person cant make a mistake and act like a fool without chancing that the event will be recorded, shared and embarrass them for the rest of their life.

Humans are not perfect people...a great number of humans are bad people. all have serious flaws. If every bad thing every person did was exposed to the world and put on headlines, there wouldn't be a single innocent person left standing anywhere..
We live in a day and age where the media has chosen a few Pet "bad things" to play the gotcha game on....race, sexual orientation are the top 2...

More than that, they do shite that they know, or should know, is illegal, are proud of it, and put it on the web themselves. You can't fix stupid.
