Preemptive now, but we know it's coming, right? If you become aware of a parish or individual school closing, please post it here. I expect a domino effect like we've had in the sports world.

I'm told that the reason it isn't is because the decision makers feel that the kids would end up being watched by the elderly, which is the very population most at risk by this virus.
I love that this is getting downvotes It's straight from the CDC LINK
quote:
Factors for Consideration for School Closure
Closing schools early in the spread of disease for a short time (e.g., 2 weeks) will be unlikely to stem the spread of disease or prevent impact on the
health care system, while causing significant disruption for families, schools, and those who may be responding to COVID-19 outbreaks in health care
settings. It may also increase impact on older adults who care for grandchildren. Waiting to enact school closures until at the correct time in the
epidemic (e.g., later in the spread of disease) combined with other social distancing interventions allows for optimal impact despite disruption.

Mine have been out since last Friday. And next week is spring break.

My school is still open, and all of this Corona crap is for the birds. We are all fine and schools and sports should not shut down.

Right now the entire districts of:
Michigan, Maryland, Oregon, Ohio, and DC have closed.
Along with Houston (biggest district in the state)
And tons of other schools districts closed.
and then you have:
LSU, SELA, NSU (meeting was last night) all closed face-to-face classes

I agree, but media driven hysteria is what it is.

My sauces say that the governor will make the decision, not individual school boards.
Superintendents don’t want to pull the trigger. They are waiting on word from the Fed. Department of Ed to see if we will have to make up the days before closing. If we have to make them up, more likely we will no close.
2 weeks starting Monday is what I am hearing though.

Thanks, I have not been made privy to that info yet.

Just got off phone with teacher wife. They have been told to make sure all kids are enrolled in Google Classroom and that all teachers know how to use Google drive. And it has to be done today

I do not understand why people are so pissy about sports shutting down. Is it an overreaction, absolutely. But the bigger overreaction is the temper tantrums from grown adults about sports being cancelled when the "leaders" are trying to find ways to avoid large unnecessary crowds from gathering.

The point is that shutting down sporting events and not schools is contradictory.

closing elementary schools is dumb for 2 reasons
1) it puts a strain on healthcare since the majority of nurses and healthcare workers are also parents
2) people would get their elderly parents (the most sensitive demographic) to watch their kids

They might as well just cancel and not worry about it. Kids are stupid and that’s over the head of 90% of teachers.

One is an unnecessary form of entertainment, the other is necessary for the furthering of our children's education. I do not see how they are the same.

I can see high schools doing this but it seems like for elementary, middle and junior highs, they would either just pack it in for the rest of the year or just have everybody come back in May and have class until the 4th of July or something.

Yeah this will just make matters worse. Especially when people start taking their elderly parents out of the nursing homes because no visitors are allowed in

They better shut it down, instances are not being reported knowingly that can seriously affect large populations in certain parishes...to many idiots in charge!
