This. I have degrees from both LSU and Bama. "Greek life" is a way, way, bigger deal at Alabama.

nah, at bama about half of the sorority girls drop out or stop regularly attending events after their freshman or sophomore years. Half of the remaining 50% get tired of frat daddies after a couple semesters and will start to look for the MRS degree. The remaining 25% are usually insufferable whiny sorostitutes that get passed around between frats. But even that bunch can be had by a GDI with the right combination of game and alcohol. The key is you've just got to separate them from the herd.

LSU fans are generally more trashy and tend to be proud of it, which is sad. See all the comments about how Ole Miss fans dress. LSU fans are proud of their t-shirt fashion statements.

Bama rush is much harsher than the rest of the SEC, particularly sorority rush. Supposedly Texas is very much like that too.
Auburn, LSU, UGA, etc. are a little less intimidating from my experience.

Bama's greek system
Over the last 10-15 or so years, that type of support has evaporated and the Angela Guillory's of the world actively choke down the Greek influence at LSU.
Probably only 15%-18% of the LSU student body is Greek. And they they are given just a short leash to hang themselves with.
I'm guessing Bama & OM are much higher.

Alabama's greek system is just different than LSU's. The university supports the greeks and wants them to thrive and bring in others at Bama. At LSU they just want to catch you doing something wrong and get you in trouble/kick you off campus. Referring to the Alpha Phi video just about any sorority on campus could pick its 30 hottest girls and make a video that rivals that one. They just chose not to I guess.

I did both Greek and non Greek while at Bama.
After a couple years I wanted to branch out and meet new people. Doing that I also found more opportunity to do things that I was interested in. Crew and water ski team for example. Also made more friends within athletics(Roman Harper is a cool dude) and people that I otherwise would not have met.
I had a great time in the Greek system and made some good relationships that are still there today. But after a while I guess my personality favored to having a bit more social freedom. NOT GDI. Just a regular dude not needing to associate to an organization.
the BS behind the Greek system is tiring too; the mandatory meetings, the bullshite you get into with your "brothers", the need to look at the fraternity as a "business."
My sister just finished at Bama. She was in the Greek system and she stayed in it for all four years. She has a lot of close friends but they seem to be almost exclusively within her sorority. When she was in school I advised her to branch out and meet new people and do different things but it seemed like she was in too deep and did not want to alienate herself from her friends. They were all great girls and nothing wrong with it. but there is a little stigma in not being in the Greek system.
more to that point, I think social organizations is a apart of southern culture; at least more so than elsewhere in the country.
the increased enrollment is doing wonders for the campus though and general campus life may move further away from the Greek system. But it will always be an important part of the Bama Student life. Happy to see some in the Greek community become outspoken against outdated traditions like the machine.
It sounds like the student body elected the best candidate this past year as well.

You literally have no idea what the hell you're talking about
Wrong. Greek Life continues to break recruitment records with numerous chapters colonizing year after year. I agree Angela is a bitch but you're wrong. I mean shite, LSU is building the new Alpha Phi house
Alpha Phi (2014)
Beta (2015)
ADPi (2016)
ATO (2017)
22.5% Students are Greek
27.7% Females are Greek
17.7% Males are Greek

Is this a done deal?
ETA: and Beta too? LSU already had way too many fraternities on campus.

Bid day is probably the absolute worst day to base your assessment of Alabama greek life on. Obviously your opinion is going to be different if you're basing Alabama on Bid Day and basing LSU on going to events with your daughter and actually meeting the girls (also if it is an event that parents are coming to it is probably not a realistic depiction of these women anyway). Yes Alabama has a lot of these rich, dumb, hot type girls. Alpha Phi is a newer, "hot" (read: slutty) sorority at Alabama. I guarantee that the older sororities are NOT rushing girls based on looks (Alpha Chi, KD, Alpha Gam, Chi O, etc.). Alpha Phi just doesn't necessarily have their first pick of girls. They decided to go with the hot/dumb type as opposed to Gamma Phi (fatties) or Delta Gamma (socially awkward, average types)

Good. Hope you are right. And I have a pretty good idea.
Most Greek houses are owned by their House Corps with a ground lease to LSU.
LSU wants more control over Greek life and if they are now owning the Alphi Phi house, that's another erosion of the Greek system.

Yes it's official (see below).
The university (UA) is financially responsible for nearly of all Alabama's new Greek houses. They group them as 'residential living' and rent them out to the chapter, essentially Greek dorms. Alpha Phi at LSU is taking this route.
However, Kappa Sig is funding 100% of the $7m new house

Dayum. So with Acacia potentially coming back in Fall 2018 that's four new fraternities at LSU within the next three years.
Even if one or two existing fraternities get dissolved or kicked off in that timeframe, can the male rush numbers support that many new fraternities?
