My son is a senior at Bama. Not a Greek. For the fouth straight year, I moved him in on bid day for the sororities, so I have observed some stuff. That Alpha Phi video is pretty accurate with respect to how these chapters want to portray themselves. It's all about assembling the hottest collection of girls. High value females.... hot, popular, and fashion conscious. I'm sure a lot of them are nice girls and good students, but it is a culture where hotness is elevated.

My daughter is a sophomore at LSU. She is mired in rush right now. She is in a well-known chapter with a big house on sorority row. I have been to a few functions. There are girls of all varieties, and an abundance of very attractive ones. But they just seem to to place less of a priorty on hotness, and less value on belonging to the "right group." Their sorority doesn't define them.

I don't want to say this means LSU girls are more socially well-adjusted and secure, but it is definitely a different culture. LSU is rushing about 1400 girls right now. Alabama had about 2500.

BTW, the drunk Bama girls staggering down the strip after bid day is unreal. I particularly enjoyed watching one try to use an ATM. High comedy.

I hear a lot of sororities hide their less attractive girls in the back of the house during rush.

My experience is that the sorority girls at lsu are just as pretty and just easy as the sorority girls at Bama and Auburn. As for culture and values, I don't know about that. I just know they all like to get complimented, get drunk, and get fricked.

Honestly the only difference between girls that can be evaluated in a time-effective manner in a span of 4 days is their level of attractiveness and fashion sense. Seriously. Rush is fricking hard, which is why fraternities at LSU are now taking an extra 33% of their expected pledge class in many cases in order to get rid of the ones who slipped in that shouldn't be there. Sororities don't have that option really (most girls look down on getting rid of pledges once they're pledged) so they take what appears to be the best girls at rush (hot, fashionable, rich) and then they're stuck if they suck, but at least they "make the chapter look good" by being hot

I would say there's a level of it at LSU, having had a lot of friends in all of the sororities recently, but when you have 2500 girls walk through your house, it's a lot harder to evaluate who is actually a cool person and who is a devil in disguise

EDIT: I'm not condoning the way girls do rush, but it's just how it happens with rush organized the way it is and no way for them to get rid of girls during pledgeship. Fraternities are lucky that they can still kick crappy pledges they don't like before initiation, but they'll completely lose that ability soon, some already have (Sig Ep)

Well, LSU culture doesn't place a huge emphasis on Greek life like other schools. Ole Miss and Bama...Greek is the only way to go. At LSU, it really doesn't matter much.

How does it feel knowing your daughter is taking it from a drunk frat daddy?

Really I'm curious, I really hope I don't have a daughter
