He should pay for secret service protection with his own money? Fly coach? Ride Uber?

You're living in a fantasy world. Come back to reality.

He doesn't "have" to have them. If he doesn't want to pay for them then don't go on the trip. The same way any normal person doesn't go on a trip if they don't want to pay all the costs associated.

So if you were president you would:

A. Never go on vacation
B. Go on vacation with no security
C. Never leave the white house

People forget how stressful being the POTUS is...

No use arguing. Dude is living in a fantasy world where the President pays for his own protection.

Four year term, I go that long without a vacation sometimes cause I can't afford it that year. It's not a problem for me. People also forget that you don't have to go on vacation to de-stess. There are a lot of much cheaper ways.

I didn't say he should always pay for his own protection. But while playing golf with Tiger Woods, which has nothing to do with his job, yeah he should pay for his own.

Let's keep going with that train of thought. He should pay for his own protection when he does anything not related to the Presidency? Do you understand the ramifications of that? Fishing, baseball game, football game, walk around the park, his kid's swim meet, the beach... the list goes on.

Unless the President were rich AF, he would be a prisoner in the White House.

Why not? You pay for your own stuff when you do things for pleasure, don't you?

Nm. Not worth it. Can't believe I'm actually arguing with a guy that believes the President should pay for his own security when he steps away from the office.

Have a good day.

While I don't believe he should have to pay for his own security, I do believe that he lives extremely lavishly and could tone it down a bit. I don't believe he takes his job as seriously as he should.

Lots of shite to hate on Obama for, but this really isn't a big deal IMO.

It costs a frick ton of money for him just to travel anywhere because of all the security coordination.

This counts literally everything from travel costs to security costs to food to whatever else.

Any time a president goes anywhere it costs a ton of money because he has to mobilize an entire militia just to travel. I was in DC on Memorial Day, and just seeing how many people and the precautions necessary just for his motorcade to leave the White House was insane.

Even on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, they told him he literally couldn't leave. He had to drive in circles. He can't go anywhere without all of these precautions.

I genuinely think people underestimate how almost every president conducts business. Bush and Clinton were both just as bad. It's just more fresh, and Obama's a more polarizing figure at this time. Also, for Bush, I believe a lot of what he did was more easy to relate to for people in the South. People know how expensive going on a hunt or going to a ranch is so they factor in that plus the security detail and whatnot.

Playing golf with Tiger Woods isn't as easy to relate to so it's harder to swallow the cost. I'm not a big Obama guy, but I don't hate him. I think people tend to be a little harder on him in these situations.
