Folks, I would think that any and all aviation slots are highly competitive. All the services are interested in having more women and minorities as pilots, so, these candidates are attractive. Service academy graduates are going to be very attractive candidates. ROTC Honor Graduates are going to be very attractive.

WRT USMC aviation: that is a small community of aviators. Despite being small, it is under-funded, so, flight hours are not abundantly available.

IMHO, it will be tough for an OCS grad, Guard or Reserve person to be selected for active duty flight training with any branch. Every other candidate that I mentioned above will have a better chance of making it.

Thanks.

I exercise routinely. Like 4-5 times a day with some decent strength training... but I'm not even close to the PT standards yet. Luckily I have until September so I think I'll get there.

Right now I can do about 75-80% of the sit-ups (in the allowed time) and pull-ups I need to do. My 3 mile-run is a good while away. My 1 mile is just under 10 minutes, which doesn't cut it. My 2nd and 3rd are even worse.

eta: I've got the first kind of PT test for the OCO next week as well. I'm going to look like a fool.

I've got 27 years in the LA Army Guard. Paid 100% of my tuition and I have no regrets.

But, I would probably advise an 18 year old to prioritize in order of:

1. % of tuition branch will pay.

2. Proximity of drilling unit. Nothing sucks like having to drive hours away every month for drill.

3. Quality of life (facilities/equipment) with Navy being the highest, then Air Force, Marines, Army is the worst by far.

Selection rate is pretty high in the Louisiana Guard for ROTC and lower for OCS. As long as your gpa is 3.0 or better you have a great shot of going once you get your commission.

You will not be employable as a commercial aviator for 5 years at the earliest through the guard. At most you wil fly 125-180 hours a year. All Part 135 Commercial operators, PHI, Bristow(not hiring due to union contract), Era which are the 3 majors and most stable require 1500 hours minimum.

That is why I recommend active duty aviation. There are street to seat slots available for the active component. They are very competitive and you will need very strong letters of recommendation to get one. But it is doable.

Army flight school is very challenging, way harder than any course I took during my college tenure. But it is worth it in the end.

The guy who reference USMC Aviation, he is spot on. We have a former marine flight school student who was processed out one week prior to graduation due to the Corps strict adhearence to a numbers issue. He branch transferred to the Army and fast tracked through. He is a pretty good stick as well.

If you are willing to do the legwork it can be done. Aviation is hard to get into for many reasons. But it's doable.

As far as the ASOS guys, they are good at what they do. We flew them a few months ago. JTACs and Combat Controlers are some badass dudes. Huge bonus money as well. But it has a high wash out rate.

If Army aviation in the guard is your goal and you are from Mississippi I have some contacts that can steer you in the right direction. Actually they can help you directly. PM me and I'll help you out.

AD Air Force here.

One route to consider is to enlist then head to the Academy.
Every year they take considerations for AD enlisted member under either 22 or 23 years old. And honestly doesn't seem hard to do at all. Enlist, bust your arse through basic and tech school, bust your arse for a few months to achieve for 5 level for whatever job you are in. After that volunteer for Honor Guard duty. This will be about 8 more months and then apply for the Academy. In a lot of cases as long as your record is clean and you have good Enlisted Performance Reports, you'll have a very good chance to get in.

PS No matter what any recruiter says, if you decide on AD sign up for 4 years...not 6. Trust me on this!

Air Force is the way to go. However, your business/marketing degree won't cut it in air Force ROTC if you choose that path.

This isn't entirely true. In the AF, a non-technical major will qualify you for everything but a technical career field (engineering, mathematics, statistics, etc.). A business/marketing degree would still qualify you for rated flying jobs, rated non-flying jobs (with the exception of cyber), and others such as logistics, maintenance, and security forces. Depending on the coursework, you may even qualify for medical logistics. So the OP's selected major will be just fine for a career as an officer in the AF.

On another note, I would either look into the ROTC program and go active, or look into the Guard (Army or Air National Guard). I would not advise you to go enlisted first. It can be done, and I was enlisted prior to earning my degree and commissioning. But it is the exception, and it is the hardest path to take.

Yes indeed. That US Navy thread with the submarine service posts is great. If I were a submariner, it would have to be with one of the nuclear powered nuclear attack subs.

What is the competition for the Academy kids coming out of TBS for Air spots as compared with the kids who go the normal route through OCS (mainly through the PLC program)? Also, are Air spots a guaranteed MOS?

I thought all air slots are guaranteed prior to TBS as long as they maintain 20/20 vision prior to flight school.

The Air Force is great except for the fact you have to tell people you're in the Air Force.

If you love America then join her Army. Everything else is just support.

Both my parents are Air Force vets. My wife and I served on active duty in the USAF as well, and my brother in law is active duty USAF right now. Highly recommend going Air Force if you can, but with one important caveat: make sure you pick an AFSC that you're passionate about AND that has a "real world" equivalent. Gotta think long term.
