O-T Military, I have a question

So I am 18 and will be going into college in the fall and it's been weighing on my mind to join either the national guard or Air Force reserves. So I wanted maybe either advice or something that could help the decision. Also, background. I have always wanted to join military because I love my country, and I figured that if I join right now that it'll help me pay for college, as well as give me great benefits for the rest of my life. So I'll listen to y'all and thanks in advance guys

This is coming from a guy with 18.5 years in the National Guard, go active duty Air Force if possible.

Air Force. Cyber if that's something that interests you.
*10 years active duty Marine Corps

What's been your experience with the guard? What are maybe a few pros and cons from it?

Depending on the state, the National Guard will normally be a little better for educational benefits. You're aware there is an Air National Guard in many states, aren't you?

Air Force still, and I'd still recommend getting into cyber, but that might not help you depending on your career goals.

Yeah I am. Not too familiar with it but I have looked into it.

Also I'll be attending USM in Hattiesburg, Ms if that helps at all

Go Air Force. Those frickers are getting full blown kitchens in their "dorms".

I'm 38, never been in the military, but if I had the chance to start over at 18, I would do Air Force active duty.
One of the things that made me not go military at the time other than being a young stupid adult, was that the Navy wanted to put me on a nuclear sub. At the time, I didn't find the idea of being under water for months at a time with a bunch of dudes appealing, still don't.

My advice to you is to contact the ROTC offices at USM. Talk to the different branches that interest you and see what they have to offer. I think pretty much all of them offer tuition in exchange for 4 years of service post-graduation.
The military is also a good way to get a foot in the door of some major defense contractors where you can earn a fat fricking paycheck when you get out. My buddy is an officer in the navy and is doing a year long program where he's working at Lockheed Martin.

Unless you plan on retiring from the military, then you won't get any life benefits. Oh, and go Navy instead.

Have you considered the ROTC program at your college?

I spent 10 years as a 11M mech infantry and the last 8 in aviation. The Guard is great for benefits, school or insurance.
If I had to do it all over again I would go active duty Army as an aviator. Serve my 20 years and retire as a CW4. You end your career with a high demand job that can take you all over the world on the civilian side. Plus you would make above $40K in retirement.
You would be retired with a pension by age 39-45. Plenty of time to start a new career and retire at 60-65 with 2 retirements plus social security and make well over $100k your first year after retiring from the Army if you fly on the commercial side after.

I heard it's actually fun. Plus you get a boatload more in incentive pay on a sub. But employment opportunity after the Navy is either as a contractor for the Navy or an energy company.

Damn, she's riding that bomb. Something just doesn't seem right. I think that's a fake. Either way, I've known a few like that in the Navy, sir.

I'm an Army guy.
For the benefits, go Air Force.
It is easier to get promoted in the Army. More positions, more promotions.
But, the Air Force knows how to pamper its personnel.
If you want to be tougher, go Army.
Good luck
