Easily the most extreme blizzard forecast I've ever seen in California.

Up to 160 inches of snow could fall on the highest peaks through Sunday, with gusts over 150+ mph possible.

Unfathomable amounts of snow and wind – not a storm you want to mess with.

Winter Storms in the high sierra take no prisoners. Especially when the Pineapple Express gets rolling.

If you've ever wondered how so much snow could accumulate to start glaciers forming, watch the Interstate over Donner Pass this weekend,

If only the snow was lighter…

These storms are usually pretty dense. If it was fluffy snow the Sierras would have the best skiing in the world

Lived in Soda Springs station up from truckee right near sugar bowl. The amount of snow it gets there every year is insane. We would get pretty snowed on on the mountain all the time. Knew the snow plow guy by name. It was crazy. But very very beautiful there.

Winter on Donner Pass often brings out the rotary snowplows.

We lived in the old train station retro fitted into condos. Where we were tons of trees and not much space to really put the snow. But they would work there way there eventually. The worst is they shut the interstate down. They have truckers stop two wide and shut down and to are sitting there for a few hours. The storms you know are coming from the news but when you are there they come out of nowhere.

One of my best friends from high school is a descendant of Donner pass. A lot of them live in central Alabama. His dad is a trapper and lives off the land, has 300 acres or so but lives in a hand built shack, learned a lot from him during high school, taught me how to hunt. He is exactly what you'd expect.

quote:

The Donner Party, sometimes called the Donner–Reed Party, were a group of American pioneers who migrated to California in a wagon train from the Midwest. Delayed by a multitude of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846–1847 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of the migrants resorted to cannibalism to survive, primarily eating the bodies of those who had succumbed to starvation, sickness or extreme cold, but in one case two Native American guides were deliberately killed for this purpose.[1]

I mean that place would be so tough to get through it is impossible for me to fathom does not seem even feasible. There is a place on the Cali side where members from the party emerged one day.

If you guys ever get the chance to drive that part of the country, please do it. I drove from Portland -> Reno -> Tahoe. It was absolutely unreal. Absolutely going back there to drive around other parts of Cali / the west coast when I get a chance again.
