LCMC Health’s University Medical Center nurses voted to join National Nurses United, the largest U.S. union for registered nurses, after a three-day vote that ended Saturday night.
The union will be Louisiana’s first among health care workers. It is also one of the state's largest, with 598 eligible members.
More than 90% of eligible nurses voted in the election. Of those who voted, 82% voted in favor of the union, according to National Nurses United.
“Nurses at our hospital wanted a voice so we can speak up for our patients and ourselves, and we wanted a seat at the table to be involved in shaping the future of our hospital,” said Dionne Jones, a registered nurse at UMC, in a written statement.
Officials at UMC acknowledged the union and said they would "continue to work with the National Labor Relations Board and operate consistently with the processes established by the National Labor Relations Act."
"As a hospital, our focus remains the same — to provide exceptional patient care that honors the Spirit of Charity," the hospital said in an emailed statement.

Break it. Dismiss anyone who prefers to unionize. Hire replacements.
If they allow this to happen, it's like inviting cancer into your body. Costs will rise as a result.

Because that's so easy to do with nurses?

There is a thread about this on the PT board. Lots of mensa moments for sure.

The hospital my wife works at, is in the process of importing nurses from Eastern European countries. Why? Because there is a HUGE shortage!

So rather than paying a 10% pay increase across the board you're saying they should stomp their feet and pay a Nursing Agency 2x the pay of their nurses to prove a point?
If the only other option when nurses strike is an agency at twice the cost the hospital is in a lose/lose situation regardless of the outcome and might as well cater to the staff that they're underpaying

Some people clearly have no clue what it costs to onboard a new employee.

I'm wondering just how awful an employer they have to be for 75% of the nurses to want a union. Especially in a field where you can always find another job.
I would never vote to unionize my current employer. (The previous one on the other hand....)

I completely get the hostility towards public sector unions, but it genuinely surprises me how antagonistic this board is towards private sector unions.
