During World War II, nearly 500,000 Purple Heart medals were manufactured in anticipation of the estimated casualties resulting from the planned Allied invasion of Japan. To the present date, total combined American military casualties of the seventy years following the end of World War II—including the Korean and Vietnam Wars—have not exceeded that number. In 2003, there remained 120,000 Purple Heart medals in stock. The existing surplus allowed combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan to keep Purple Hearts on-hand for immediate award to soldiers wounded in the field.

Operation downfall is extremely interesting. Would have made Normandy seem small.

Well, it's not exactly a fact, but a lot of Americans would have died. Maybe 500k, maybe not.

Japan picked the fight. They got what was coming to them.
I feel sorry for the innocent ones who died, but that's war. Don't bite it off if you can't chew it.

So the number of purple hearts manufactured has a direct correlation to who would have died?

Sounds like it's given to killed OR INJURED. So there's that...it's not just killed.
Regardless,

Meh.
I actually didn't know the purple heart was given posthumously. Thought it was just given to injured servicemen

With the exception of children, we should not treat citizens of the japanese empire as innocent people. Unlike many germans, the japanese people KNEW and were willing accomplices to the evil.
Japanese culture at the time was insane and crazy. Civilians were essentially soldiers and would have fought us if we invaded.
They were not innocent people.

It saved millions of Japanese lives also. The Japanese would have never surrendered and fought until the last man standing.
