The dumber one is, the more they rely on government
Government has a vested interest in making the future generations dumb because it means more dumb people to rely on government, which will allow government to get larger and have more power/control.
This is by design
All of this

That's great...you are a child struggling to learn 7+4 through memorization. Now what?
You going to teach them algebra, then?
Or missing addends? "Doubles plus 1" when they cannot remember 7 + 4 = 11?

It is a whole lot more work than what it is worth.
Because you are and adult and presumably think of this as a basic operation. Try to remember when you were learning how to do these operations. It wasn't basic back then.
Some of yall act like you came out the womb knowing how to do math.

I see what they new way is doing...
We all do mental math in our head by some method or another than we have concocted in our head over the years. (well at least the people that are good at math).
This is just a way of showing some of those methods on paper. It seems confusing on paper, especially when it is explained retardedly, but the concept is similar to what we do in our heads.

I do remember hearing that 9's are scary now.
I can handle 9's but 7's always freaked me out.

I think most people assume kids can't learn this way because that's not how they learned as kids.
Kids are sponges. They can learn more than you think they can.
Math is more than numbers and memorization. It's a logic. Give children the foundation to build on and they will be better off.

My math teacher used to tell me "how many routes are there that you could take to go from the school to your house?"....then she would say "as long as you are getting home, does it really matter which one of those routes you chose to get there?" ---pretty much, as long as we got the right answer, did it really matter how we did it?
This way is teaching you three different routes home, so you can find which way to get home best for you.
I've had the luxury of wading in with a first grader, rather than having it dumped on me with an older child, so I like it. I can get how older kids could be thrown off though. It should have been grandfathered in or something. But the concepts are all basically ways to do math in your head. They're teaching the different ways to solve problems I had to figure out myself under the old rote way.

Son is in second grade and having to deal with this bullshite.
Apparently next year they teach them like 8 different frickin ways to multiply. I want to pull my hair out with looking at this shite sometimes.
This is the first year they're doing it in my kid district. All the kids have 60s and 70s in math.

When I first saw these "new" ways they were teaching kids, I thought, "That's exactly how I do it in my head." Makes sense to teach it that way. I wasn't, but I think it eventually becomes very logical for most people to do arithmetic this way.

Would you rather your child not understand why 6x4 is 24, and instead just memorize it? How will that serve as a good base when your child needs to solve 354x286? Some of the complaints here are just asinine.

Weekday the frick is a doubles fact? Or as
A doubles plus one fact?
6+6 = 12
So 6+? = 12
Similar to doubles plus 1
6+7 = 13
So 6+? = 13
Addend and subtracthends are just missing number that you have to add or subtract to complete an equation.

You would address the "doubles plus 1" before 7+4, if they are struggling.
You don't have an answer...figured that much.

It's not 8 different ways, but rather, a progression to truly understand the logic of multiplication.

These kids, on average, will be much better at math than previous generations. Fact.

If I were FORCED to do math that way from the beginning, I would have struggled. My teachers were always understanding of the fact that there were many different ways to solve a problem and didn't always have to go by the book. These methods of teaching are indeed forcing you to learning by the book.
What you are describing is an issue with poor teaching practices, not methodology. A teacher should teach multiple methods, but accept work done by a student in a way that makes the most sense to them. Unfortunately, most teachers are ill-equipped to facilitate this.

Mississippi is trying to change Common Core. I don't think it's a good idea. Again, it's a standard, not a curriculum. If you're going to get rid of Common Core, chances are we will just be lowering the standard and go back to memorizing tables.
