While he was a liberal, it's hard to beleive that he was pushing "liberal bullshite" given the content of his shows.

Maybe outside of writing shows, he was, and in that case, good for him. We need people to seperate their political beliefs from showmaking.

He was old school liberal. Not communist liberal like the Left today.

Old school liberals have more in common with today's conservatives than they do with today's communist liberals.

Lear, like Mel Brooks believed the best way to get rid of stereotypes is to make fun of it rather than hide from it.

So Archie would not come off as just a punching bag for Meathead, he was often given classic lines during their battles:

(Archie is accused of stealing some tools from work):

IRENE: Archie, haven't you seen that sign down at the plant,
"Pilferers Will Be Prosecuted"?

ARCHIE: Yeah, that means f@gs stay out of the men's room.

---

EDITH: That was so smart how you got Lionel & Mr Jefferson back
together. You could be another Henry Kissinger!

ARCHIE: Please Edith, I got enough problems without being a Hebe.

---

Yes, in the end Archie would always be proven "wrong", and made the butt of the joke. But until that point he would be the mouthpiece
for "The Silent Majority", so unrepresented in the media (even more so today, when Archie is a cult hero)

This was the "dirty secret" of AITF, as Fred Silverman (then a CBS
exec) later acknowledged: "The fact no one wanted to admit is that
while Norman Lear, Hollywood and half the country hated Archie Bunker,
the other half loved him. They laughed with him, not at him."

AITF might be the greatest sitcom ever.

He didn’t think he was making fun of the Left. His intent was to make knuckle dragging right wing characters that spouted oafish things, so the audience would mock them. Lear was horrified when the public loved Archie Bunker. It was exactly the opposite of what he hoped for. Lear despised the stereotypical American man.

Everything on that show was a shade of brown, clothes, furniture, wall paper.

good riddance. all the sensible characters were, in his own words, the joke characters. so archie bunker was the joke character. you were supposed to laugh at him, not like him.

his influence was then found in other pop culture characters like rorschach from watchmen, william foster from falling down, and the movie starship troopers.

he literally belittled and mocked conservatives/rightists. you really shouldnt revere him.

Meathead was the one that was left leaning. That dumbass is really like that in real life. Archie hated people who muched off of the government
