It's called pride. I am an adult. Time to cut the apron strings
There area lot of families with means that it's kind of the norm that the dad saves money and pays for his daughters wedding. It's actually a pretty common.
My father in law probably wouldn't have went for a big wedding, but my wife's grandmother had savings bonds that she specifically kept over the years to make sure that my wife had the money for a nice wedding.
We got married 18 years ago and kept it to around $15K.
My daughter will get some help, but I will not be funding at $40K wedding for her.

This response is a fake as the lsugrl who acted like she didnt want a nice wedding.
If your parents had the ability to help you out with things, you would accept it. And if you didnt, you are an absolute fool.
Guess I am a fool. My parents did help me with college. They helped with what scholarships didn't cover which I am forever grateful for. I felt after that, their job was done. It was time for me to be independent. I am proud that I never ask for anything from them.

The best wedding reception I ever went to was when my cousin in Bayou Black got married. They had the "reception" in my uncles huge side yard overlooking the bayou. They had beer iced down in big metal tubs, couchin delait, fried catfish, jambalaya, a Cajun/ country band, and a couple hundred people there. It was on a sunny Fall Saturday (LSU open date), with a cool breeze blowing through the huge moss laden Oak trees.
On the invitations, it stated that it was a blue jeans wedding, hence the informality of the setting. But, it was hands down, the funnest reception I ever went to. I left at about 9 PM to drive back to NOLA, and they still had about a hundred half drunk Cajuns dancing and drinking.
Moral of story, you don't need a fancy reception to have a fun, memorable reception.

My buddy got Married at Rosy's Jazz Hall on Tchoup. was nice - wedding/reception all in same venue.
had a great time. I know they had a smaller budget.
Another friend did the Chicory, got married on roof and party downstairs... or someplace near the Chicory, I don't remember, I blacked out.
