Preach! I'm with you, except for the brewing. But it is something I'm interested in.
I've had a few beards over the years, and I'm in the Finance/Accounting field, so it is a professional environment. I grew it out a few years ago, and only shaved because I was looking for a new job. First day here, I meet a guy who has a nice thick beard. So they obviously don't care about it. I grew mine out last year again, and except for shaving it off in the spring and immediately growing it back because my wife said she liked it better than a clean shaven face, I've had it going on over a year now. I trim it at least every other week. Gotta keep the mustache out of my mouth. I noticed about a month ago that 3 more guys here started growing one. That's 5 of us, just on this floor, working in corporate headquarters at a large bank. It definitely isn't frowned upon. We're southern men. If we want a beard, we'll grow one.

Yeah, I think that "professional setting" rule/excuse comes from the older generation (bosses) not being a fan of beards in a white collar workplace, so they outlaw it. Gives them more control over their employees. I know my dad gave me a little flak when I first grew mine out after high school about not being able to work with one, and I've had every permutation of facial hair imaginable over the years with not one comment from a boss. Other than nice moustache,

I don't know. My Irishness prevents me from growing a good beard. I'd end up looking like Ethan Hawke from Training Day.

so this morning I'm doing inspections for private hangers at the regional airport, and I come up to one hanger, a mechanic is working, I tell him what I am doing and ask him if it is a good time for me to do the inspection. He calls his boss and I hear him tell his boss this over the phone:
"no he doesn't look like a terrorist...well he does have a beard though"

At our hospital many of us are about to start Ebola centered training. Due to the masks we have to wear and them needing a proper seal...no facial hair...esp beards...allowed.
One of the male respiratory therapists I work with is not happy that he has to shave his beard for this. He would totally do it if there was an actual ebola patient...but just for training purposes? He's trying to fight it, but I doubt the hospital allows it.

I'm going to grow it out this year for NSN and I work in a pretty professional setting. The beard won't be a problem...its the week or so in between when it finally grows out that will make me look like a lazy POS.

It's Movember, and there are rules to this game.
1. Clean shaven on Nov 1
2. Grow and groom a mustache for the entire month.
3. No joining the stache to your sideburns, that's a beard.
4. No joining the stache at your chin, that's a goatee.
This month isn't about just being lazy and not shaving, it's about who has the sack to bring awareness to men's health issues like prostate cancer. So take up the challenge to grow your best Tom Selleck stache or Hulk Hogan handlebars. If your wife or boss doesn't agree, tell them you are sacrificing your looks to fight cancer. They can't so 'no' to such a worthy cause.

I have to get fit tested for air purifying masks once a year. I never wear them for work though, its just for training. It is the only time I shave.

Any guy can go thirty days without shaving. It takes a real man with social proof to participate in Movember, and grow an actual "mo", or mustache. I've done it two years in a row. It's fun.
