The Office of Personnel Management, which oversees health insurance for 8 million federal workers and their families at a cost of more than $60 billion a year, has never checked the eligibility of those on its rolls, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office, which has been pushing OPM for years to improve its oversight. And that failure is costing taxpayers billions and raising premiums for millions of civil servants.

quote:

For 12 years, a Department of Transportation employee fraudulently enrolled his sister and niece on his federal health benefits plan. He claimed the two were his wife and stepchild.

An equipment repair worker at an Army facility in Alabama kept an ex-wife covered for 14 years, and was caught only when he tried to add his new wife. And at the Department of Justice, an employee added a friend and her friend’s four children, asserting they were her family members.

quote:

Despite prodding from the GAO, the agency has no plans to conduct an audit because it said it would be too expensive. The agency relies on more than 160 government employing offices and more than 70 contracts with health insurance carriers to enroll and verify the eligibility of Federal Employees Health Benefits Program members.

That means the $120 million audit would come out of OPM’s budget while the savings accrue to enrolling agencies, according to OPM.

The GAO just hates minorities and poor people. Right?

I don’t understand why they’re so concerned now. They have all these illegals getting VA healthcare services. Veterans (that served this country) wait long enough for an appointment, now this.

Every cent of government money is an opportunity for fraud. I'd venture to guess over 50% of federal funds are wasted by fraud. But then again, there will never be an audit to prove that so...

Grunt, this has been going on for decades. But, to make you feel better, they don't actually give a shite, and never have. BOHICA.

To make you more depressed, fraud has been repeatedly proven in OAG audits. Nobody cares.

The only good thing is those that were on fraudulently will have to reimburse what was spent on them for services rendered during that period.

Look no further than the pentagon audits.

Even if it is audited nothing happens.

Someone needs to stop it, now. I know Tommy Tuberville just drew up legislation to nix it, hopefully it passes.

Asking the audited to punish themselves is the height of folly.

That’s how so-called insurrections start.

The real tragedy.

The government, including the military, is just a jobs program.

We could do without 90 percent of them.

If true, then the various agencies should be the ones looking into their own people to see if they are adding non-family to their plans. The actual employing agency would be able to verify eligibility a lot easier than a distant OPM.
