GF fell and split her kneecap in half with one piece being displaced down towards the calf. Surgery tomorrow which will include the normal figure 8 wiring but will also repair a torn tendon.

I just had a standard dislocated kneecap and my rehab was over 90 days, although I was just in a brace within a month. Although my cartilage was basically completely shredded.

how old is she? What kind of shape?

That sounds really bad. I dislocated my knee with an avulsion fracture (basically the tendons ripped out chunks of kneecap after pulling out), and it was a solid 3 months of PT after surgery, then some. This sounds worse. I am guessing she will require extensive surgery, though I am not a doctor.

Crutches for me, though I was a 17 year old young buck at the time.

unfortunately, I had the same injury last October. Slipped and fell- had emergency surgery the next day. My recovery was way longer than 90 days but I had complications. Bone took longer to heal so I was fully immobilized for about 60 days and then had limited range for another 60. Once the bone was healed, I had scar tissue build up which resulted in not being able to bend my leg past 90 degrees. Had a knee manipulation in April and then finally finished PT with full range of motion in mid-June. So, for me about 9 months. Also just had another scope to clean up an extra bone growth so it has been a long road. Best of luck!

44 and in pretty good shape all things considered. 5'0 about 125 I guess. Says the pain is a bitch and I imagine it is.

How did you get around after surgery? Leg will be immobilized. Crutches or chair?

Rehab will be way longer than 90 days. I was 26.

i was on crutches with knee immobolizer for the first month or so. then just immobolizer, then a flexible brace for another month

I have seen many of these repairs when I was working with Dr. Andrews in Birmingham. This is very painful and can be associated with long term pain and arthritis. If a piece is displaced it could be articular cartilage and that is another issue the will predispose her to early onset arthritis. I don't think she will have much pain related to the incision site but I think she probably will have pain associated with this for the rest of her life in some way unfortunately.

I think the 90 day time frame is probably correct with respect to the patella healing but there will be pain for some time.

Just my opinion and every patient is different but it is a serious injury that can lead to problems down the road.

Because she told you this?

You can imagine her using this as an excuse to never get down on her knee(s) again, if you know what I mean.

Buddy of mine had a patella split in half, but not dislocate. It gave him trouble for years (happened when he was 18), but a couple of years ago, they did an experimental procedure where they used stem cells to regrow his patella tissue. Worked like a charm and now he can run (like a few miles) pain free.
Prayers for her recovery. Look into the stem cell procedure!

Mine was crushed into several small pieces and detached from the patellar tendon. The pain was awful, but the rehab was worse. I was immobilized due to other broken limbs so therapy was delayed by several weeks.

Since she won't have the same delay, 90 days is probably about right for the return of most function and range of motion, although a return to 100%, if possible, will take more time.

ETA - As KAC noted above the delay allowed a significant build-up of scar tissue. Hopefully that won't be a problem.

Actually a really good idea to find a doctor that will use stem cells. Most of the guys I know now are using them.
