A probe the size of a basketball court has taken unprecedented new images of Jupiter. NASA's $1 billion Juno spacecraft, launched in August 2011, took five years to reach and settle into orbit around the gas giant, which is more than 415 million miles from Earth. The probe has so far photographed Jupiter's poles for the first time, detected bizarre cloud formations, recorded mysterious auroras, and scanned deep into the planet's thick cloud tops. Juno repeatedly swings by Jupiter in a wide arc to minimize time inside the planet's intense radiation belts, which can damage sensitive electronics. Juno completed the fifth such maneuver on March 27, recording a fresh batch of images and streaming that raw data back to Earth — and now amateur astronomers are beginning to turn the gray, unprocessed photos into brilliant full-color images.

This new image, processed by amateur astronomer Roman Tkachenko, shows Jupiter's north pole in all its stormy glory.

This shot, put together by Gervasio Robles, merges three Juno flyby images to show Jupiter's elusive south pole in full view.

Here's an older one, but a good one:

Space is so stupid, I wish we would quit funding it.

We should launch our trash into orbit around earth and/or Jupiter so that we don't pollute the atmosphere

we could probably solve most of our country's woes eliminating 5 years of space hoopla. spend billions of dollars to get a picture from 10 million years ago 10 billion light years away and it looks like something that's an the cover of a science fiction book.

Love this idea except not into orbit.

A giant island sized blocked of toxic waste launched into the abyss.

Exactly. We don't need to fund this shite. Without our support Israel, Africa and space would all just disappear. We need to fix America, space can find a way to pay for itself.

We couldn't put a dent in our country's woes by stopping space exploration funding.

NASA represents like .5% of our federal budget. Welfare ALONE is over 12%.

We spend 18 billion on NASA annually and like 700 billion on Medicare alone.
