The list uses New York as the baseline, so example New Orleans, here at 21, is 80.5% as expensive to live in as New York.

Think these are relatively accurate? This is 2023 data.

Maybe cost of replacing car windows and stolen homegoods is driving NOLAs index up?

Like, ur house is 50% of New York, but when adding in the cost of repairing your car-jacked vehicle it bumps up to 80%?

I believe it, especially with the current insurance debacle. Even USAA is now refusing to write policies in NOLA.

I feel like property in NOLA is pretty expensive. Not property tax, but the property itself. There's just not a ton of it available. So for what you get, I can see it being a major factor in the COL in the city. It's footprint is much smaller than any of the cities listed in the thread title for sure, and half of that footprint is un-liveable ghetto.

makes me question the legitimacy of the list. runaway inflation going on 5 years now. The folks we have working down their can’t afford anything outside of basic living.

Makes sense... insurance may be a huge part of that.

That website doesn't seem like it has the same data from page to page. For example, when you do a New Orleans v Dallas comparison ( LINK), it says you need $9,500 in New Orleans to have the same lifestyle as $10,000 in Dallas

Wow, we checking in at 80!!!

Housing prices have jacked up since 2018, but everything else in SLC has remained fairly low.

Spent some time in Santa Barbara, its fricking worth it IMO. That place is amazing, purely from a geography/climate standpoint. you got the ocean, mountains, nearly perfect weather. It looks like a postcard in real life. People are insanely liberal and weird, but I would suck it up if I could afford it.

You've got to pay a premium to live in an area where you won't get shot. Housing in New Orleans is stupid expensive for no reason.

exactly, Lakeview prices are comparable to heights in Houston.

Your money does not go very far in New Orleans

COL doesn’t matter if the government pays for most of your rent and you don’t care about the quality of public schools.

Problem in New Orleans isn’t the lack of housing stock.

It’s the lack of housing stock in safe neighborhoods. Too much of the available housing are in no-go zones.

Not reliable data. It is crowd sourced and will have embedded biases.
