Sorry but the Gaugin looks amateurish. Look at the weird angle on the foot. It looks like something I would do and if you saw it without the reference of who did it, would think it suggested a lack of talent.

Also, the two subjects look like they belong in another painting with a different background. It looks like the background here was stolen from a low quality cartoon.

The Cezanne I like.

Love Gaugin and his Tahitian phase. Saw the exhibition in Cleveland a few years ago and was blown away. I am willing to speculate this painting was bought by Qatari royalty, but I'm not 100% sure.

It is. Arab oil barons love their paintings.

Sorry about Arsenal. Oil barons do love their art.

No, not at all. That's just the piece that went up for auction at the right time with the right people bidding. It's one bidder that got it at that price and it may not be their favorite piece, just the one that was available at the time. There are superior works that will never be for sale and some that may not be available for decades.

I would pass over that painting if I saw it at a flea market.

This. I get that a painting is worth what some idiot is willing to pay for it because they deem it an investment in an up and coming artist but frankly a painting like this is a joke compared to the incredible realism of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci:

What about that painting makes it $300 million?

The real value of anything is what someone is willing to pay.

Believe it or not, the actual Mona Lisa is about as big as the picture you posted on the screen.

If you see the real one you immediately think "I thought it would be bigger".

Art is one of these things I just don't really understand.

That pic reminds me of what is, or perhaps, was the most expensive picture ever taken:

If impressionist art is your thing, the new Barnes Foundation museum in Philadelphia is incredible. Their collection is unprecedented.

It still would sell for over 1 billion if it ever went on sale
