The fact that several people were willing to pay just shy of 300 million makes it worth that.

That's fine. I'm not a fan of gaugin either, but I'd jump on the Cezanne if I had millions as discretionary dollars.

The "art" of being an "artist" is getting people to pay you obsurd amounts of money so you can participate in a hobby you enjoy.

stuff like this is why i will never understand art. clearly you are buying the art because of the painters history... right? this is nothing special. and if it is, that just proves the point that I will never understand art

I"m not sure Gaugin or Cezanne are really getting a lot out of these auction results.

If I had to go on pure aesthetics and what appeals to me, I would go with Titian.

No, this is a relatively recent phenomena which started in earnest after the Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911.

A painting is worth what someone is willing to pay. Usually there is a good reason for the price, based on the artist's life, i.e. from a specific period in of their work. This painting in particular is inflated by Arab oil barons, who've inflated the market. There are numerous other factors at play as well. The art world is pretty much free market forces at play.
