I still don't know what this means. We would still be in the parish. Why would we lose homestead exemption?

Parishes have a right to tax the homes within their boundaries. This is subject to the homestead exemption meaning that part of the value of the property/house is not taxed.

Towns and cities also have the right to tax property. Their taxes are not subject to the homestead exemption. For example, I live in Lutcher in St. James Parish. St. James Parish property taxes are subject to the homestead exemption. Lutcher property taxes are not. While town property taxes are usually not a large amount they are in addition to the parish property taxes.

Not jelly in the least, just don't want to get my hopes up and have this fall flat.

I also don't get the Kip hate in here.

Not necessarily industrial, but several places that would have significant contributions to the property tax base:
Woman's Hospital
Mall of Louisiana
Ochsner
Baton Rouge General - Bluebonnet
Perkins Rowe
Long Farm Village (under construction)
High Grove (under construction)
Blue Bayou/Dixie Landing
Industriplex area

That is a pretty impressive list. I wonder if these places have weighed in on he proposal. I know awhile back Garyville in St. John Parish tried to incoprorate as city. And tried to draw the boundary to include a large oil plant (just guessing but I'm thinking to get some tax $$). Said plant did not approve. Plan failed.

Oh, and for poopsonsaban: I don't think I'm explaining the city/parsh homestead excemption well. I found a link from a Webster Parish site which kind of sets it out:

quote:

The homestead exemption is applied toward parish taxes. City and municipal taxes are not exempt.

Agreed. If I were mayor I wouldn't want mutiny.

Nonetheless, this is a big step in actually doing something. I signed up for their email.

If you want a look at the pros/cons of this possibility, this exact thing has been happening in the Atlanta area over the last 8-9 years. I think there has been 3-4 new cities created in that time, and it's the model SEBR is trying to follow. Lots has been written about it. As expected, the argument against it are cries of Racisim. Basically, the non-taxpayers of Fulton County are complaining that "if the taxpayers leave, who gon pay for us?"

Houston is a great example of this...there are tiny municipalities that are surrounded by Houston city limits and ETJ.

Bellaire, West Universty, South Side Place and a few along the I-10 corridor west of 610.

Sweet, glad I saw this. Assuming all the good stuff is true, my wife and I will be signing this. We live in the 70817 area and would love to send our kids to a GOOD public school and hopefully have our property values increase as well.

I know one of these guys and he is a stand up guy. If you are behind this I suggest you reach out and help them get the word out and the signatures. If you have an HOA get them to come meet with them. It's going to improve all our property values if it goes down.

Who decided on the name St. George? Pretty damn stupid, although it does go along with the religious-based laws that will most certainly be proposed.

St George fire district. That is the name of the fire district we in the unincorporated area pay for while also kicking a share into cover brfd.

It's not based in religion you jive arse turkey.

Are you sure about that? I've never heard that. I thought that the name, St George Parish, simply referred to the Catholic church parish that has been in that area for a long time? It started as a rural mission church but I don't know when it originated. At least as far back as the 1930's.
