I have a question for you on the DSG transmission flush. I am going to get it done for the first 40k service, but I have read a diesel mechanic on the TDI forums said after the first you, you can basically not worry about the transmission flush. what's your opinion on that?

25-35k miles

That might do it, I'm not sure of the initial cost of the diesel option.

K6's comment is good to know. It looks like you'll recover some of the cost of the diesel on resale, so that helps.

I have noticed that diesel fuel prices haven't fallen as nearly as fast as gas. Trying to factor that stuff is a crapshoot anyway.

I would place a value on the power and torque. That makes 'em a lot more fun to drive.

You're def right about the interior and Accords

As good and well thought out as Honda interiors are, their exterior paint and finish is pretty much the worst I've seen.

They also seem to be noisy compared to most domestic cars and Toyota. That's a problem if you put a lot of highway miles on your car. The Buick LaCrosse is actually the one quietest I've ever driven. IMO, Buicks seem to be designed to hug the road and reduce driver fatigue. That would be my go to if I were driving across the country on long, straight freeways. The Passat may be like this, but when we were car shopping, I couldn't get comfortable in the seat. VW seems to over bolster their seats. Some folks like that though, but not me.

On the flip side, the Accord seems to be better with entertaining the driver. Their cars are surprisingly tossable, and the 6 speed manual in the Accord is shockingly good for such an affordable machine.

When my wife's Accord wears down, I'm going go get one with a six speed and the more firm suspension for myself. Hopefully they don't change the design too much before then.

I'm not familiar with the DSG. I just know it's expensive. I would do what the manual says to do.

Vette, you're correct. The main value in the diesel is that you get good economy while still having some power. Passing on the interstate is where the TDI shines. It'll run it's arse off and get well over 40mpg doing it.

At 60mph 60mpg is achievable. At 75mph you'll be more in the 43-45mpg range depending on what you're doing with the AC and how flat the road is.

Fuel cost/economy is not the reason to get a TDI. You'll burn your savings in maintenance costs.

I would suggest staying away from the DSG. If you want/need an automatic your ROI will probably be better with the accord. It's gonna be negative anyway, it just depends on how negative you want to get

Look into a 328d?

I second this. I would prefer this car to either. Its a little more expensive but a fantastic driving car.

I find the interior on my Jetta to be exceptional for what is considered an economy class car.

The seats are amazing. I wouldn't want to put the miles I do sitting in a corolla or accord, but that's just my preference. I rent a shitload of cars, and I've yet to drive something in the price range of the Jetta that I thought was even in the category of nice. My car has substantially more power and is much more comfortable than anything I've rented.

I could rattle off a pretty good comparison list later. For the record, the Chevy Malibu and Nissan sentra are probably the two shittiest feeling cars I've ever had the misfortune of driving a long distance in.

Honda's are notorious for shitty paint, but I thought they had mostly cured that.

I find that to be a German thing in general, but I like that.

I drove a rental Hyundai Genesis, and while it had some issues, it had excellent seats.
