the pay will be marginally different (maybe 1k a yr) between MS and BS for coastal engineering in the first several years. MS isnt some magical pay increaser in the first several years. Since most coastal work comes from government dollars of some sort, its all about billability. Typically, the real way you start differentiating yourself in pay grades is winning work.

Examples of hydraulic modeling could be predicting storm surge levels and wave heights on a levee face, predicting how water will circulate in an estuary, predicting how longshore currents transport sediment along a beach, predicting how the Mississippi River's bed responds to dredging or floods. Lots of possibilities. They enjoy it.
