Second best battlefield I've ever been to with Chickamauga being #1.

It's a long, long road.

It's not very intuitive (IMO) without a map & GPS as the park is the perimeter of the battlefield and it's tough to know where you are.

The payoff for me of the Park is the exhibit of the USS Cairo.

I knew several folks who were on the salvage job of it in the 1960s.

It was done by Bisso Marine out of NOLA.

It's worth really reading the names/ranks/duties in the Pantheon - which also has crazy acoustics. You can make a three part harmony with with your own voice, but you might want to let the room clear out for that.

I've never been to Chickamauga, but Gettysburg is the best battlefield I have ever been to. Vicksburg is also really nice. But, Gettysburg is the best.

Do this. Seems like every vacation as a kid we always tried to find a battle field to go to. I loved it. I miss it too. Why can't more people have a passion for history?

Am I the only one who got really pissed off when you left the Union side of the park and the road and landscaping turned to shite on the Confederate side?

Took away all my enjoyment that they chose to only manage the upkeep of the Union monuments.

Eta yes the ironclad fished out of the Mississippi is cool as hell.

Eta2 bring kfc and have a picnic while there.

People that go.to civil war battlefields are racist!!

Anyway, I love vicksburg, been a half dozen times. Camped there as a boy scout, walked the whole thing.

I recommend driving, lol. Do a little research on the siege to better understand what/why things are where they are

It almost feels like walking into a time machine when you go to these places. I try to imagine things as they were.

Take the whole day to see it. I went last week with friends and they rushed through. I may go back with my bike soon and see it at a much slower pace.

It is a really great military park. Great monuments, great scenery.

I have done it two ways: I have done the 12 mile hike and I've done the drive.

I think you should do a sprinkling of both.

You get an idea of what the park commemorates when you visit the monuments and everything, but you don't get a sense of the battle until where you walk where cannon were set up. Or though the hills that are natural or dug out.

And, of course, there's the iron-clad ship there...

Do both.

I have done hikes at 3 of the best military parks in the south: Vicksburg, Shiloh, and Chickamagua.

Take my word for it.

I imagine standing in a line shooting at another line of guys who is shooting at me, then we all put knives on the end of our guns and run at each other!

Then if I get cut or shot and don't die right away I probably die slowing from infection.

Once I think about it awhile the modern world seems alright to me.

I've got to make it to Vicksburg, I've never been.

My great, great grandfather was captured at Vicksburg in June 1863.

Goldie's had good BBQ before the casina bought their land and they moved to the south frontage road. Still decent.

Shiloh and Antietam are the best preserved Civil War battlefields out there.

Yes. The place has been kept like the actual battlefield at that time!

It was one of the bloodiest too!
