I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago today. Mobility of my shoulder is on track according to my physical therapist. And some mild discomfort on what was operated on. My concern is that I still have an area of my wrist and thumb that still has numbness and burning at times. Went to the DR last week for the post op follow up and he says that it’s still effects from the nerve block and it will go away. I’m growing concerned about this. I’m showing improvement in all areas except for that. Has anyone had any lingering effects from the nerve block after surgery?
I have therapy again in the morning and I’ll bring it up again.

I had a nerve block in my leg for my knee surgery in 2017. Felt awesome immediately after surgery, but it wore off roughly 12-16 hours later and all the pain came with it. No lingering effects or tingling like you're mentioning. Definitely bring it up tomorrow with the therapist.

My sling has been plenty enough cock block

It is funny when I’m out in public and you see parents yanking their kids to make a clear walking path for me I might milk this as long as I can.

I had elbow surgery in March 2019 and had a spot that was numb for almost a year after. I don’t know if it was the nerve block that did it or if it was nerves that were cut during the operation. Either way, it took nearly a year to get feeling in that spot.

Depending on what nerves were cut to do the surgery I would think some amount of numbness could come along with that.

I've had two leg surgeries with hardware and there is loss of sensation in several areas but mine tend to be near the incisions/hardware or the break itself.

I do believe the anesthesia can have some lingering effects for several days after a surgery. At least I have noticed that in my experience.

After the vaccine thread I think you should lay low on commenting on medical-related topics.

Take your chances with that experimental crap.

I am speaking from experience in this thread.

Move on.

Not really encouraging but reality. I know I’m early in the process of recovery but I cannot straighten my arm without the burning of my wrist following.

Due to the location of where the nerves are blocked it is much more likely that the numbness you are experiencing is related to surgical manipulation or the way you were positioned during the procedure. However, your surgeon will of course look to place the blame on someone else. But yes, with time, it should improve.

I had shoulder work done 6/20. I had the burning and numbness you describe up until I tore out some scar tissue about 5 months post op.

More likely secondary to surgery itself or positioning. Depending on the approach, they can put the wrist in some slings that can cause compression at that site. While a block can cause some lingering numbness, it’s exceedingly rare compared to the surgery or position itself, especially considering how isolated the numb site is as you are describing it

I already did and I’m taking my second chance March 22nd. Sometimes one chance is better than another.

In the shower last night I ran hot water over the area and I couldn’t tell that it was hot. I could feel the water running on it but couldn’t feel the temp. Weird.

My shoulder surgery nerve block wore off abruptly at 18 hours and the pain hit like fire. No subsequent complications from the nerve block.

Must be something else going on with yours.

I had rotator cuff surgery 12 weeks ago. I had the same numbness as you around the wrist / thunb area. During PT they put lotion on my arm and scraped with a metal blade up to the elbow. It got better each time and finally got feeling back. It will be fine. Going get my other shoulder done Friday. Hopefully it does as goid as thiso e.
