So you're telling me there's a chance....I must've missed this article. It's probably physics garble, but hey whatever works.

quote:

An Alcubierre warp drive would involve a football-shape spacecraft attached to a large ring encircling it. This ring, potentially made of exotic matter, would cause space-time to warp around the starship, creating a region of contracted space in front of it and expanded space behind. [Star Trek's Warp Drive: Are We There Yet? | Video]

Meanwhile, the starship itself would stay inside a bubble of flat space-time that wasn't being warped at all.

"Everything within space is restricted by the speed of light," explained Richard Obousy, president of Icarus Interstellar, a non-profit group of scientists and engineers devoted to pursuing interstellar spaceflight. "But the really cool thing is space-time, the fabric of space, is not limited by the speed of light."

With this concept, the spacecraft would be able to achieve an effective speed of about 10 times the speed of light, all without breaking the cosmic speed limit.

The only problem is, previous studies estimated the warp drive would require a minimum amount of energy about equal to the mass-energy of the planet Jupiter.

But recently White calculated what would happen if the shape of the ring encircling the spacecraft was adjusted into more of a rounded donut, as opposed to a flat ring. He found in that case, the warp drive could be powered by a mass about the size of a spacecraft like the Voyager 1 probe NASA launched in 1977.

why do we think it has to be Earth like for life?

Earth is the only planet we know of so far that has been able to support life.

re: Neighboring solar system Alpha Centauri shows evidence of orbiting planet..
On Dec 2nd, 2010, NASA announced that they discovered an arsenic based bacteria in Mono Lake, California. (No phosphorus).

It was originally thought that Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, & Sulfur were essential elements in supporting life, but the recent discovery of a flexible bio-chemistry proved that "life-as-we-know-it" could be more flexible that we assume or could even imagine.

Therefore, we may be incorrectly dismissing alot of the life sustaining environments due to dissimilar environments from earth.

However, I understand science's pursuit of an earth-like planet.
1) a potential alternative human habitat. (pending transportation technology)
2) without empirical evidence of alternative bio-chemistries, how is it possible to prove that life exists in alternate environments.

Maybe that species can not exist at 90F ?

Then the original poster's point is moot because neither species would ever know that the other exists.

Put it in insider a warp bubble and you will be at Regulus having sex with a green alien inside of 10 minutes.

ETA: Oh.. and.. Topic of interest.

That article was debunked, but it brings up a good point. Life has proven to take places in extremes on our own planet in conditions previously thought uninhabitable. Just look at archaea that live in the heat vents, and chemo synthetic bacteria in the deepest parts of the ocean.

I think looking for earth like conditions (temp range and liquid water etc) is a good starting point it could be completely wrong. The problem is there currently is no other reference point for other indicators to look for.

This is so cool. I wonder if we'll find intelligent life elsewhere within my lifetime. It's bound to happen one day

In other words, a matter/anti-matter annihilation of Jupiter. I haven't done the calculations but that's probably a lot more than a supernova.

Oh, that would only be enough to instantly make Earth uninhabitable. Sweet.

on this planet that would be crazy, but who is to say beings haven't sustained life on these other planets because it doesn't meet our requirement? Just because everything on Earth functions on water and light doesn't mean it has to on different planets.

Well, the building blocks of life (Carbon) along with proteins and all other things that make up living things would disassemble at those temperatures. However, I guess there is a possibility that life on other planets are composed of different matter.

That's kind of my take on astrobiology. One has to be able to look outside the box. Lifeforms on Earth can grow in a wide range of conditions. Even in places originally thought to bu uninhabitable.

Unfortunately with even our own galaxy being so vast, it is much easier to search for life in such narrow constrains.

Astronomers study planets and stars by looking at various light spectrums that they give off. This can tell them a lot about temperatures and composition of elements. Therefore they stick most to the biochemistry rules set on earth.

Just keep in mind that they have proteins that can survive high temps. Tach polymerase was isolated from a bacterial that survives in heat vents.

Hydrothermal vents get up in the 800F range. That's a far cry from 2500F.

I get what you are saying and it is truly amazing the organisms that can survive at the most extreme places on earth, but most of these planets are far more extreme than even the extreme places here.

Like you pointed out however, that still leaves the possibility of life being composed of matter we are not aware of, which to me is much more likely. I don't even think we have scratched the surface learning about life even on our own planet.

that's 3x the tempature of Mercury's hot side, forget life do we know of anything that could survive at that tempature.
