Yes go ahead and pour one out for me.

How flexible on price are these things? I’ve seen if you’re stubborn you can typically get 10-20% off. Any good stories or tips on how to get the best deal?

Don't go to big box stores.

Deal with diamond wholesalers that also do the jewelry work.

When I was getting engaged, I took a pic of a ring from the Zales website to a wholesaler, hand-picked all the diamonds and had his shop re-create it. Saved over $4,000 (and it had a bigger center diamond than the original).

If you start asking around, every different guy is gonna say the have a Diamond guy and how awesome of a deal they got and how perfect the Diamond is.

Basically, they all got sold the same BS and their “guy” made lots of money on them. It just may be a little cheaper than Lee Michaels

find a master jewler that does custom work. you'll save 50%.
if you don't have one I can put you with a guy in Louisiana. i updated my wifes ring a few years ago. Cost me less than $20k for the stone and band, appraised for $55k

Find someone who works at Stuellers. Have them buy it with discount. Thats the absolute cheapest you'll get your overpriced shiny rock.

appraisals on jewelry serve no real world application aside from insurance.

How close to Atlanta are you?

Find a friend that can get you in Americasmart downtown. There's a lot of wholesalers that are more willing to negotiate with you and have a lot more options as far diamond qualities.

+1 on the lab grown. It’s literally a real diamond. My wife was all for it once she saw the bang for the buck factor.

1) buy from a wholesaler

2) Get diamond sizes that are just below threshold sizes, like get 1.45 instead of 1.51 carats, they go up a lot past the 1, 1.5 and 2 carat marks

I used a wholesaler at the WTC in Dallas, nice fellow

Shop around when buying the stone.

Places will work with you to price match and beat the competition.

Diamonds aren't rare, they are marked up tremendously, and they will negotiate. Like others have said, find a wholesaler or an independent jeweler.
