My Dad, brother and I are taking a road trip from Jackson Hole, through Yellowstone and Billings, and finishing in Rapid City. Our itinerary is as follows:

September 5-8: Jackson Hole
September 8-10: Yellowstone
September 10-11: Billings/Little Bighorn
September 11-13: Rapid City

Any suggestions as to what to do/see while in these cities? TIA

Don't you have a job or something? Geeeze. That's like a 3-4 week trip. Must be nice.

Little Bighorn is great but it's out in the middle of nowhere. Try to work a stop at Devil's Tower into the itinerary.

Have done a similar road trip a couple of times. People that have never seen it have a hard time grasping how vast these places are. The last time we spent 7 days in Yellowstone, driving 1100 miles never leaving the park, and still not seeing everything we wanted to see.

I don't think you are allowing enough drive time one you leave Yellowstone

Well worth it. Really weird feeling standing among the tombstones on the hill where Custer and his men fell.

I just visited Montana this summer and it's absolutely beautiful. Take many pictures and check out as many spots as possible. The Bozeman/Yellowstone area is one of the prettiest places I've ever seen and the drive is spectacular. Rapid City is a neat place as well. Go check out Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the Badlands National Park when you are there. If you have time I would also venture over to Deadwood/Lead SD. Lots of cool things for fans of the old west and the HBO show Deadwood.

It's about two hours further from Little Bighorn than Billings, but Bozeman is much better IMO. It's also really close to Yellowstone. Billings isn't bad though and has a few decent breweries downtown to hit up

Rapid City is pretty small but the Black Hills are pretty and there are some good bars and brewpubs to hop around to there on Main St. Definitely see Mt Rushmore

In J Hole there are tons of good bars and places to eat. There are lots of nice restaurants for a town its size, Snake River Grill is the only one I've been to and it was pretty solid. Lots of bars on Broadway there and go to the Million Dollar Cowboy to say you did

The drive from J Hole to Bozeman through Yellowstone is probably the prettiest drive I've been on in the world and is something everyone should experience. That and the weather will be some of the best parts of your trip

What do you want to do?

You're taking a road trip with no real plans?

Jackson Hole are you staying in Jackson or at Jackson Hole ski resort?

Do you drink beer?

Restaurant recommendations?

I just went through that exact trip this summer so I have some info but it may not be useful to you

Million Dollar Cowboy bar in Jackson Hole...unless it's changed the bar stools are saddles and there are silver dollars inlayed in the bar and toilet seat.

i happened to be there during their Octoberfest party. Good polka band.

I asked some random old man at the bar which of the brews was his favorite. his reply to me was, "...try all five twice. then decide." I did.

I've made the drive before. It's so much better and scenic in the winter, however, the roads get closed a lot. In summer you don't have to worry about closed roads, but it's not as scenic.

Driving through Wyoming can be boring. Rapid City is OK, the drive to Mt. Rushmore is pretty neat though.

Agree... I expected Wyoming to be more scenic, but apart from the Northwestern Part its actually boring and flat.

Montana and Idaho on the other hand are awesome, especially when the snow starts to fall.

Northwestern Montana and the Idaho Panhandle where C'ouer D'Alene is as majestic and scenic as it gets. Anyone who says that we will run out of trees has never been to this location of the country.

There's the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs which is south of Rapid City. It's an active archeological dig. I went there last year and was skeptical but it was really awesome to see the site.
