Posted on the money board but no one goes over there.

They sent me a letter saying that I owe them 2000 dollars because of credits I received when filing last years taxes. I filed through turbo tax. They asked me if I attended school in 2015. Which I did. 2 classes. That's how I got the credits. Now they are saying they don't have evidence of this. I've since graduated but I logged into my colleges version of student accounts. I took two classes in the spring of 2015. For some reason my 1098 t for that year does not have the amount I paid in tuition. Instead spring 2015 is listed on my 2014 1098. Which makes no fricking sense to me.

Seems like something you could get evidence of to take care of this problem

I would have to think that the school should have SOMETHING that they can give you that shows that you took said classes. I would call someone there.

What matters is when you paid it. Did you pay it in 2014 or 2015?

Well if you didn't claim it for 2014 you still can. Should be a wash. (I believe I'm correct but don't quote me). You may still get late fees though.

Tuition? Spring 2015 was paid in 15. I know because originally I was supposed to graduate December 2014

He won't get late fees for filing on time but he will get interest charges on funds due. It's fortunately, not much.

Then you take your cancelled check, or credit card statement to the registrar's office (or by email) and request a corrected 1098.

See what Hubba Bubba said. Take proof that you paid your Spring '15 tuition in 2015, and request an amended 1098T

Thanks baws.

Let me just make sure I got this right. If I show them I paid on Jan 21st. Which I just found my bank statement. It should have been on my 2015 1098?

So just got off the phone with a guy in fees. He's telling me that because the cost were incurred in 2014. Like I scheduled my classes. That that's why it's on my 2014 1098. This seems fricky.

That is a little bizarre.

The 1098-T clearly states "Tuition RECEIVED" in block 1. It does not say costs incurred.

Interesting accounting by the university. Maybe they can't track payments properly and they have IRS approval to use that method?

There are other requirements that must be met to claim the credit as well. There are two credits available also. You choose the one that you qualify for best.

If you are a convicted felon you can't take the credit.

I think I see your problem here. This is the OT Lounge on Tiger Droppings. We don't have your transcripts or records of enrollment. You should be talking to the Bursars Office of the University you attended. They can help you.

Exactly. My property taxes are billed to me in 2016, but I have until January 31st to pay, but if I pay in 2016, I can write it off in 2016. If I wait until 2017, I have to wait until I do my taxes for 2017 in 2018.

I pay spring tuition for LSU in December. Maybe that is the issue.
