I'm probably looking to buy new since I've heard that these cars hold their value well, and the starting MSRP is only $22k or so. I've never bought a car before so I'm hoping for some friendly advice on if I should go to a dealer, carmax, or somewhere else.

Any negotiating tips if I go to a dealer? I've read that carmax doesn't really negotiate.

Baton Rouge only has one Subaru dealership. You're not going to get as good of a deal if you lived in a city such as Houston or Dallas (assuming they have more than one dealership or another Subaru dealership nearby in a surrounding suburb).

Good luck to you. I was going to help, but now I am not.

It was just an honest question. I live in central Texas and we have about 3 dealerships in the area.

You probably should ask the people at the nearest female Rec softball league.

Truecar.com and look into the Costco car buying program. I know Subaru is on that program. Negotiate off the invoice and not MSRP, I repeat, do not negotiate on the MSRP.

You have a better suggestion for a quality mid-size SUV that won't break the bank?

I just bought one a few months ago.

I emailed all the dealers from their website saying exactly what I wanted and that I was looking to buy tomorrow. Can you give me your best price? I have a limited time table and don't have time to play around with negotiations.

One dealer came back better than the others with a great price and I went with him.

Easy enough.

The trick is to try and get you into the dealership so they can waste all of your time and break you down until you just buy their car.

Do your research then handle it all by email.

Good luck on finding Forrester.

Subarus are awesome from what I hear. The new Mazda CX-5 looks really good and the price is great. I don't know how it rides, though.

Great car. The wife wanted something safe and it has the best safety rating. Ours also has the eye sight feature that brakes etc. I do warn on the panoramic sunroof. She really wanted one but it bakes your arse in the summer so I close the shade every time I get in the thing. Yes outdoorsy people love subaru's but they are also people that can't have a shitty car break down in the middle of a forest. Great line of cars.

True car blows. It's in with the dealerships. Take the invoice price, subtract the dealer hold back and any rebates. Subtract the advertising fee which they don't tell you about and name a price a bit lower than that.
