Contact your congressmen (House and/or Senate) and explain the issue.
They can sometimes help out.

So, I decided email to my local congressman Gary Palmer in Hoover, AL (as recommended by cosmokramer) not expecting a reply. Tuesday I get a call from his secretary and wouldn't ya know it, the next day it was done. Passport in hand now. Can't wait for the Domican!
That's pretty awesome. You should send cosmokramer some rum

Just a heads up to any procrastinators out there. If you are travelling in 2 weeks or less you can walk into the New Orleans Passport Office LINK (or your closest office LINK) and apply in person. They take your application and documents (passport photos obtained from post office or walgreens, proof of id such as birth certificate or expired passport, in state driver's license, extra id if out of state driver's licence which can include social security card or valid college id).
As mentioned in a previous post, I went into a local office 3 business days ago to apply and confirmed yesterday that my passport was ready to be picked up.
In a perfect world we all apply for passports 3-6 months ahead of time but sometimes things come up. Going in person to the local office is a reliable way to get the job done.
Glad to hear LSULyle was able to get it squared away.
