Always had mine done at an embassy, wasn´t as arduous as it seems here. I think I never waited for it more than 2, possible 2 1/2 weeks.
Looks really complicated getting it while at home in the US.
I´ve got to get my Spanish passport renewed shortly as well, and since I´m now living here, I´m hoping it comes off without a hitch (very smooth, when at home).

Just get a passport card, it's half the price of the book. Unless you plan on flying international in the next few years, you plan on flying somewhere baw?

No
I've never even flown in the US before
I'll look into it. I'm clueless about this stuff

Since it's a pretty standard 6 week process time for passports no you didn't give yourself plenty of time.

So, isn't there an option to appear in person at a passport office (not a post office, but one of the actual regional passport offices)?

Go to passport agency in new orleans. I think you have to make an appointment first. LINK

So if they got all my EXTRA stuff on FRIDAY may 15, I should be ok?
You should be based on what happened in my situation.

I walked into the El Paso Passport Office on Friday, with a scheduled appointment. It cost me $110 for the passport, $60 for expedited, and $25 for in person, so total $195. My old passport expired 10/2014 and was in another state so I had to apply for a new one. I also had an out of state ID. I showed an AZ license, birth certificate, one other form of ID (TX insurance license, no picture), and proof of travel (airline email of itinerary leaving on 6/2). I am picking it up in person on Wednesday, they could have mailed it to me but I didn't want to take the risk since I'm leaving so soon. Don't know if this helps but it was my experience. I was shocked at how easy the process went.

The word expedited alone simply Means you waited too long, and then having to rely on them to do their job right is the other mistake
Posted on 5/24/15 at 7:04 am to Mizzoufan26
You are depending on the worlds slowest organization to expedite something? Should have applied 6 months prior to travel.

I got my passport card last year. Came in 10 days, didn't get it expedited.
I went to the clerk of courts office on coursey. That's probably 1 less layer of red tape to go through.

What is a card good for? Mexico and Canada?
Posted on 5/24/15 at 7:39 am to yellowfin
The card is good for Mexico, Canada, Bermuda and the carribean. Perfect for cruises. And it's cheaper.

I just googled and it looks like it's only good for land or cruises.
Posted on 5/24/15 at 7:47 am to yellowfin
Yeah that sounds right. All you really need for a carribean cruise is your drivers license and birth certificate but I didn't feel like packing my birth certificate everywhere I went.

Yeah but if something happens to you while in one of those ports.....and you are not able to get back on ship....you can't fly home to the U.S. with a passport card.

Contact your congressmen (House and/or Senate) and explain the issue.
They can sometimes help out.
