Because the projectile is traveling so fast that the friction experienced by the material on its surface, and on the surfaces that it is in contact with, causes them to burn. It also heats the air around the projectile so much that the air emits light.

What is this projectile made of? I hope they zero in on the target fairly quickly when they sight it in.
I don't think it is saying the rail gun projectiles cost $800,000 each. I think it is saying that it could replace the Zumwalts gun system, which happens to have projectiles that cost $800,000 each.

I think the railgun would replace the system currently being used... and that one has the $800K projectile.
Still does seem pretty expensive but I wonder how much one of them there Tomahawk Missiles cost per trigger pull.

Why does the Navy willingly describe how this weapon works?
Doesn't that give other countries an idea of how to build one for themselves?
Why can't the Navy just say "we got a cool gun" and leave it at that?

The idea of a rail gun has been around for years and years... The impressive part is having a mobile power plant with enough juice to shoot one.

This system has been in development for years.
If someone else wants to try and get all the technical specifics on their own they have a long road of R&D ahead of them.

Correct. Current system on the Zumwalt uses LRLAP's which cost $800k per round. That cost is why it's being replaced.

The recently commissioned USS Zumwalt has been experiencing difficulties with its 155mm Advanced Gun Systems, designed around the projectiles that cost around $800,000 apiece.

Only problem with railguns in space would be Newton’s Third Law of Motion… equal but opposite reaction. The railgun would have to be attached to a pretty massive ship to ensure when it is fired it didn’t send the ship spiraling out of control. Lasers don’t have that problem. But then again, we aren’t there yet. Let’s find a way to get to space cheaply before we decide to fight up there.

This. Think of the MAC guns in Halo. Capital ships have a rail gun that can launch 600 ton to 3000 ton tungsten projectiles at targets at extreme velocities.
