Hey Darth, what about commuting on rainy days? Do you do it? I'm sure you catch rain here and there anyway. How well can you see from the bike, through the helmet, shield, etc? Any advice, no matter how trivial it may seem, is appreciated.
Riding in rain is pretty easy if you gear for it.
Most of the good riding suits have options for dealing with rain. A lot of them use liners you can zip in for rain. Some suits like an Aerostitch just can handle pretty much anything they throw at it. The downside is riding in heat though. BMW and some other German company were testing this cool mesh that responds to weather. I got to test one of the BMW versions a few years back. The mesh would open in the heat, but close when wet. It was great while new, but stopped working as effectively as it aged.
The best solution for rain is to have different options based on the season. Aerostitch is a great winter/spring/fall suit, but limited in the dead of summer.
Using stuff like rain-x on your visor helps great for heavy rain. I dislike misting more than heavy rain. Doesn't blow off the lid as easy.

What's your opinion on cold weather gear? I personally use a full body under suit from a company called "FreezeOut" ( LINK). I've had it now for about 4 years it works great. I can ride in temps down to the low 30's wearing this under my clothes (I'll have on chaps & a leather jacket over my clothes of course). The only downside is once you get to wherever you're going you have to come out of this suit or you'll sweat to death.
What do you wear for cold weather?

Everybody wants a motorbike to a certain degree, and anybody who disagrees with me is a lying sack of shite. It might not be something you think about or even consider as a possibility, but deep down inside you know you want one......well I'm ready to pull the trigger. Buddy of mine's got a 2001 Yamaha V Star 650 Classic with 14,000 miles on it and two new tires and said he'd sell it to me for 1500. I am a complete beginner, so I need some opinions and expertise from those who know these things. Is it a good buy/good bike for a starter bike? Thanks yall
1. type control + H
2. type "bike" in the find box
3. type "boat" in the replace box
4. Click "Replace All"
I think that is what you meant.

In winter I typically wear my Aerostitch into the 20s without much issue without any heated gear. It can be kinda a pain to wear a one piece though if you are doing anything besides riding that day. I can go to mid 30s with my Rev'it mesh suit with the layers in. I have taken the Rev'it suit on a cross country trip where I hit low teens for short bursts coming over mountains, but I was also wearing heated vest/gloves and my bike had heated grips. Wasn't the most pleasant.
My biggest issue in cold weather by far is my fingers. I have found first gear winter gloves to be my preference, but prefer anything heated every day of the week.
I typically wear a waterproof dual sport boot year round that keeps pretty warm with good socks. Don't typically have issues in the cold with my feet.
For my neck, I go buy a cheap walmart toboggan hat and cut hole in the top and slip it around my neck. Seals of my helmet and my neck line. That works pretty good for me. Not a big fan of the balaclavas.
I use to have one of those Ewan and Charlie BMW Rally Pro suits from Long Way Round. It was great in the winter, sucked once it started to warm. Was so damn heavy in the rain though. Thing just sucked up water like a sponge, but the liners worked awesome.

I've rode down in the 20's with my FreezeOut suit a few times. Having that on under clothes and my other gear (chaps, gloves, leather jacket, & neoprene mask) can keep me feeling alright for about an hour or so, more than enough time to get to work. And after that really the only problem I usually get is my hand getting cold after a while. Now that I've got my Geezer Glide I'm interested to see how it's big upper and lower fairings do at keeping the wind off me. I've had bikes with windshields in the past but this is the first fairinged bike I've owned.

As much fairings as you can get are awesome for cold weather.

Yeah, I've noticed riding around this summer that I'm not getting near as much wind on me as I have on my other bikes. Another ting I like about this one is it's fuel injected so no more having to fight & choke to get it to start when it's 32 degrees outside.
As for fairings, I've got as much as Harley will put on one....
I am thinking of replacing that windshield with one that's tinted and a bit lower.

Me-my-mo-mandy, Randy: I'll try to be myself and just enjoy the bike. But if it don't work out I think I'll go with the goateed pirate option. Peace

Goateed pirate bikers are some of the most neighborly people you'll ever meet.

Beemer business guy--- Hang several suitcases and assorted storage units all around your BMW and ride around in perfect posture, covering miles and miles of highways like it is a competition.
Nailed it!
Grew up trail bike's. Raced em from 12 till 17. Bought my first street bike the year I graduated high school, an 83 V65 Magna. I've owned Yamahas, Honda's and Harleys. What these guys are telling you is true. Today's drivers are distracted, it's inherently dangerous, etc., etc. What I've learned is themost dangerous thing is just a thought that at some point will go thru your head......"shite, I can ride this m'fer".
Usually happened to me on trail bikes, Wake up with dust in your mouth wondering, where am I....then you heard that 2 stroke idling on its side, oh yeah I was riding.

Pretty much what one of my good riding buddies in Michigan has, he's always swapping his screen out for a taller one when he goes on longer rides. I think he carries both with him.

That screen is pretty much the exact one I'm thinking of replacing mine with. Holding on to this one for cold days sounds like a good idea now that i think about it. It's easy to swap them out, just four or five screws is all it is.

Had that buddy of mine take a look at the bike today. He even took it for a spin (yes I was riding bitch.....first and LAST time dammit). I'm going to pull the trigger this week. He's going to drive it to his place for me and keep it there for a while. He's on some empty back roads that are perfect for me taking my good ol time getting comfortable with the bike. Gonna take baby steps with this process so I can enjoy riding for the long haul. Thanks for all the input fellas. I'm still listening

I solemnly swear. In hindsight I think it might be more dignified to wreck the damn thing before I do that again. Soooo.....yea lets just take things going forward. By the end of the week I'll own my own motorcycle. Can I retrieve my man card then, Darth? What if I find the first 18 year old latina I can find to hop on? (Translate that as you will.....haw haw haw haw)
