So I drove in a blizzard last week on I-90W from Livingston to Missoula (day trip to Yellowstone) and a few rocks hit/chipped my windshield.

This morning the sonofabitch cracks.

It ain't getting warm til may, and luckily the crack is horizontal and out of my line of vision.

Has anyone experienced replacing a cracked windshield in cold weather? The guy at the local auto glass place recommended to put clear tape over the remaining chips and to replace it in the spring.

I got hammered by something on the way to work on one of the 5 cold days we have in South MS. By the time I left for the day the crack had run about a foot.

I was not happy. CSB

Move to God's Country (the South) where your only issue is the sun melting steel and setting water on fire during a string of 103 degree days.

Problem solved.

No thanks. I enjoy my cold and mountains. It beats the heat and bugs year round. But thanks for the suggestion

I do not think the cold weather will allow the sealant to seat correctly, thus causing a bad seal is why they are hesitant to replace it at this time.

Listen to that expert that replaces glass for a living. The heat from your engine, the differential in temps external/internal, the variation between in use/daytime/night. Those are gonna be significant stressors on the glass and sealants.

Just like repainting your vehicle, you want mild dry temp days so the sealant can seal properly. So either wait for Spring to hit your area or find a 24 hour/day heated and humidity controlled garage. Otherwise you'll be posting here in July about how your windshield leaks water and whistles at speed.

I had one small chip in my windshield and was driving down Nicholson the day it snowed in BR a few years ago. I watched that son of a bitch spread all across my windshield in different directions as I drove. Was not too happy.

I bought a new car on Thanksgiving and I already have a crack across my windshield from one rock and the day it snowed here in Dallas. I have awful windshield luck.

Your auto insurance will cover replacement every couple years. Dont drive until spring like that. Make a call. Someone will come to your house to do it.

As for spring, the issue is the temp of the glue. Garage with heater.

I used to work for Safelite auto glass, 100% of rock chips crack. The warmer the weather, the more likely the crack opens up.

If you're going to replace it, just go ahead and take care of it now.

Check with different glass shops. It depends on the urethane they use. They probably won't come out and do mobile in cold weather but if they have a heated garage they can. It may have to sit for half a day to a full day after windshield was put in. Just depends on what brand of urethane they use. Most glass shops up north will have urethane varieties for cold weather and special primers. They also have urethane heaters to keep it warm. Just check other glass shops if you want done now. If you don't care, then wait till spring.

I only get one new windshield/year for free so I usually wait once it gets that first runner...at least until I have to get an inspection.

With my luck, I'd have a rock in my shite the next day if I replaced asap, and have to ride it out 365.

Drive this bad boy, just fold the windshield down.

Voila! No pesky crack to be seen.

(And it builds character.)

Stay out of GA. The tax collecting LEO love to pull you over for having a larger than 3" crack in the windshield. I got pullled over test driving a private sale work truck. I would have replaced the windshield regardless but the LEO was a prick about it and gave me the ticket even with the owner sitting with me test driving it. The owner gave me a discount for the cost of the ticket and repair.

During one summer, something hit my windshield hard enough that there was no way there was not a crack, but I could never find it. That winter, I turned on my defroster and the crack grew from behind the inspection sticker and halfway across the windshield.

If I replace it now, chances of my windshield getting chipped then cracked are still likely since it's still winter. It's best I wait until it warms up when the rocks aren't out in full force. This is what the window tech told me

With that said, the local glass shop here has a temperature controlled garage, as does safelight and other glass shops in the valley.

What a complete dick, he pulled you over just for that or another reason?
Nice of the owner though

Mine did, too. I didn't even think the joke was that funny.

I think he was new to the job bc he was young and had an older officer with him. He was a prick the entire time. Kept his hand on his firearm and kept looking around the cab and in the bed of the truck. Asked is 3 different times how we knew each other, where we were coming from and where we were going. Then it took him 10 min to come back with the ticket. The owner was saying, "Its my truck I'm selling". The LEO said I was driving and should have seen the >3" crack and shouldn't have driven it out of the neighborhood.

ETA: the crack was only on the passages side and didn't obscure vision at all.

if the guy at the glass place recommends you wait, I would certainly wait. businesses don't often pass up the chance to make a buck, so if he is recommending you wait, it is due to some bad experience he has had in the past. sounds like someone that I would want to give my business to in the future.
