My parents house flooded today for the first time in 25 years or so. Nothing catastrophic but surreal nonetheless. Who knew 30 minutes or so of rain could cause so much damage? Looks like we're gonna start ripping out sheet rock on Monday. ugh

I really feel like we refuse to believe that water has to go somewhere

Oh I know it has to go somewhere. It just makes me big mad when it goes into a place I like. Broad Street Theater flooded too. It's just the nature of living below sea level. We'll all have to deal with it at some point.

Yup. Everyone in southeastern US needs a pirogue and flood insurance even if the area never, ever flooded before.

Sorry that happened to your folks. They will get through it. Sucks though.

Thanks. I appreciate that. It wasn't what they expected to deal with when they woke up this morning, but fortunately it's fairly easy to fix. It can't compare with what others have dealt with around here.

No need to compare to others. Everyone knows just 1 inch of water can be pretty destructive. It's a mess and a shitey thing to wake up to.

I'm so sorry for them. I think any flooding is catastrophic.

How much rain did they get? How did they flood now and not Katrina or Rita? Is because of other buildings or raised property surrounding them? Just curious

Harvey is low (3ft average) but not below sea level. The fact that it has not flooded at you parents in 20 years probably indicates there has been a change in drainage, probably due to construction.

My mother just moved back into her house. She got 3 inches of water last August. I had no idea that 3 inches of water could cause so much damage or that it would take so long waiting for cabinets.

Best of luck to your folks.

thats just silly. If I ever flood I'll have a lot more problems than just losing my house.
