Went to turn my key last night to leave campus and damn thing turned all the way without cranking. I felt it break when I turned it. Eventually pulled the whole contraption out.

Anyone ever had to have this kind of thing replaced/fixed? Talked to my mechanic and said he could fix it no problem but couldn't estimate price. Any ideas how much it might cost?

any thoughts are appreciated

ETA: a picture if it helps

You're talking a whole new unit. And unless you get all your door locks re-keyed you'll need two keys, one for the doors and one for the ignition.

I had this happen and I think it came to around $300 but I didn't get the locks re-keyed (it was an older car and I ended up replacing it about a year later).

Had that happen. I think it ran me about $250 thru a deal.

Try calling a locksmith. They can normally replace ignitions and pin them for your key so you wont have to get the doors re-keyed, and for a lot less than the dealership.

This is above what a locksmith can do I think. Luckily my mechanic is in the family so trust him completely

Its a known defect. My 07 is giving me problems.

There should be a screw that holds the ignition module in that you access from the bottom. You can buy the kit with the key programmer and find instructions on how to DIY. Check out the forums at ford-trucks.com. Lots of mechanics posts and great DIY threads.

I feel your pain, years ago (mid 1990's) I had my key break in my Honda accord's door while trying to leave ivars. I just walked home - next morning came back with the spare and used a pair of pliers to get it out of the door.

Monroe unfortunately

Happened to my 4 runner and I took out mechanism and brought it to jacks lock shop while I went across the street and had Shipley's donuts. 45 minutes and $25 later my 4 runner was good as new.

the mechanism broke where it actually connects to the steering column. It isn't that simply unfortunately

It happened to me. I called a locksmith and he was able to get the broken key section out.

I had a 92 Prelude and mine "broke" it didn't completely come out like yours did.

If you turned the key, the car would start. When you let go it would turn back to far and shut off.

I drove that bastard for 3 weeks holding the key to keep it running...while steering...and shifting...

I think it was around $500 for a whole new ignition.
