My greatest moment during my garage sale & collecting LSU memorabilia hobbies

I’ve told this topic before (been a few years), and I just posted the partial story on the found Rolex thread.
Up to about ten years ago, I was a major vintage and antique LSU collector. It was a $20,000+ collection I built from stuff found at garage/estate sales, and off eBay.
Back in 2009, I went to an estate sale and they had three LSU watches from three different bowl games in the 60’s (Bluebonnet and two Sugar Bowls).
I bought all three for $700. My intention was to hopefully sell two and get my $700 back, keeping one watch for free. At the same sale, there were a pair of LSU cuff links with “DS” engraved on them, but the were $100, so I passed.
They were engraved on the back but the engraving was ground off. I was able to make out two letters on the 68 watch. The letters were C & S. With some help from The Rant, we determined it was Clarence “Pop” Strange.
I knew Bo Strange (58 team) was his son, and his other son, David Strange, played in the 60’s. I find Dr David Strange’s number in the phone book and call him.
I tell him what I found and he tells me those watches were stolen in the early 70’s, when they lived in Kenilworth.
I give him the number to the estate sale company, and tell him I am going to return them. He needs to call them and get his watches back. I also tell him about the cuff links with “DS” on them. They were his as well.
He calls the company and gets his stuff back. He tells them I deserve an award, and he was going to give me $100.
For some reason, the estate sale company didn’t think I deserve $100, so they only gave me back $600. I was pissed, cussed the old man out (but I get my revenge later in this story).
Dr Strange invited me to his house. If you don’t know, Pop Strange not only coached at LSU for nearly 30 years, he also played in the early 30’s, including LSU’s first three bowl games.
Dr Strange had every watch that he, his dad, and his brother played/coached in except the 65 Sugar Bowl and 62 Bluebonnet Bowl.
So these two watches completed the collection.
He tried to give me $100, but I would not take it. He also offered me the 68 Sugar Bowl watch, since he already had one. After telling him no a couple times, he made me take it.
It cost me $200 to repair the watch. I wore it for a few years.
When I sold my collection, I tried to give it back to him and he wouldn’t take it, he told me to sell it. I sold it for $600.
The revenge I got on the estate sale came a few months later. He had a sale in Kenilworth. He had some rare LSU items but had them way over priced. I go in the toy room and I find two small, golden rubber basketballs. One was priced $1 because it had scribbling on it. The other was priced $2. (I recognize the scribbling instantly).
I quickly check out, hands shaking because of my find.
They were balls given out at Maravich’s last game at LSU. The scribbling was autographs of Pete and his dad.
I went back the next day, told the old man karma was a bitch, and told him what I found, and cussed him one more time.
I sold it for $500 (I think). The signatures were in bad condition. The other ball sold for $60 (I think)

Cool story.
When you going to start garage sale hunting again? Haven’t seen any new hauls lately from you.

I love Dr. Strange. He had some cool stuff in his office also. Glad to hear he is still alive. Anybody know how his son Richard is?

They only gave you $600 out of the $700 back? Why should they have given you a reward? And honestly, why should they have given you any money back at all? Are you just assuming they stole them?

Beautiful LSU-centric rubbish, mate

I kind of got burnt out on it because I did so well the last few years (since Covid). I’ve only been out maybe four times this year. I did get a nice haul on my last outing, with the watches, records, etc. I made $400+

The items were stolen, and they were selling them. That’s a crime.
Dr Strange told them to give me my money back or he was getting the police involved.
They didn’t offer me an award, Dr Strange told them he was going to give me $100 reward. They felt I didn’t deserve one, so only gave me back $600 of my $700. They were pissed they lost the sale of the watches and the cuff links.

We need a TulaneLSU / theantiquetiger crossover and Top Ten

My dad still has his Cotton Bowl watch from 66. We also have a big arse green wool blanket that has a raised cotton bole on it. It’s pretty cool. We used it as a blanket up until the 90s probably.

A watch thread deserving of an upvote, finally.

I'm no criminal lawyer, but surely there has to be scienter.
They may not have known until after the fact.

They did not know the items were stolen, but after learning the items were stolen, they were still pricks about it. The actually asked Dr Strange for proof the watches were his. He told them that I was able to determine who the watches belonged to pretty quick, it won’t be hard. Plus, they still had his cuff links. My story is incorrect above. The cuff links had “D Strange” on them, not DS.

A few items, including this ball. Others were:
PSA certified autographed Maravich autobiography
The large wall with Bertman ball from old Alex Box
Original 1st game in TS photograph
Cannon’s Heisman ceremony program (signed twice)
Anri carved LSU Tiger (super rare)

That’s why it only sold for $500. It just reads “Pistol Pete”.
When I first saw it, I instantly recognized the auto, but I knew Maravich was not correct (not his). I didn’t realize Maravich was written by his father (perfect match). He also signed it Press, but it was on the textured part of the ball. It’s hard to see, but there is SS before Maravich.

That was a lot of rambling. I was confused why you were cussing Dr. Strange out at first.

Lol. Sorry about that.
I was cussing out the old man that owned the estate sale company. I forget his name. He was a retired professor at LSU. I believe he taught botany.
His exact words were, “Since Dr Strange is going to give you $100, and I feel you don’t deserve an award, I’m only giving you back $600. After Dr Strange gives you $100, you will have your $700 back.”
frick that old man!!! The look on his face was priceless when I told him I found the ball for $1 at his sale the day before.
