My company just told us that we are switching to a self funded health plan to try to save our insurance from going up over 50% in one year. Will average a 20% increase over last year. Thanks Obama.

I thought she got it free with Medicare?
She better not be going to the doctor just to get out of the house.

I feel sure this has already been said but...
$480 per year for health insurance for a 78 year old woman is CHEAP AS shite!! The rest of us are subsidizing your mother. Quit yer bitchin.

You still have to pay a lot out of pocket on Medicare. I pay $357 a month for my supplemental insurance for Medicare.
With that I still have co-pays of $20 (generic) & $50 (non-generic) for prescriptions. I pay less than $20 for a couple of the generic ones because that's what they normally cost for anyone. I still have the gap for about three months during the year. During that time, my two non-generic prescriptions have cost me $124.26-$220.23 (Lyrica) and $88.45-178.65 (Cymbalta) each month.
I don't have a $20 co-pay at the doctor any more.
I had a procedure in July that totaled $3753.88 in billing charges. I had to pay $444.77.
I don't see much difference in what I'm paying out of pocket now & when I was working. The difference is the government is paying the amount my former employer used to pay.
ETA:
For whoever said: "Thanks, Obama"
It was worse the year before Obama care went into effect. I've only been on it for two years. Those higher prices I paid for my non-generics were pre-Obama care. The difference is a real, "Thanks Obama" for me.

Humana is awful on the provider side. They deny almost everything, and only pay a fraction of what they're supposed to on what they approve

People that retired when companies had pensions don't have the gap. Theirs is done like a group plan or something because my parents, who both retired with a pension, don't have nearly as much out of pocket as I do. I think everyone that has 401K's or some other form of retirement will have that gap.

My Dad passed away when he was 57 years old. The only money that was paid out of the money my Dad put in social security was the 11 months before my 18 th birthday. What happens to the rest of the money he put into the system?
Your mom should have gotten your Dad's Social Security.

This. and God forbid you ever need a stay in rehab or skilled care. They will not approve, often times even with a doc to doc.

The OP misspoke initially and tried to clear it up later, but her mothers preminum is not $39/ month but going up $39 dollars a month to about $140 (or a 40%increase). This is an " instead of" Medicare plan not a "gap" plan, traditional medicare part b coverage would be about $105/month. In this area people's and Humana gold are the predominant plans, both as well as traditional Medicare part b have there good and bad points, best situation is to look over the plans carefully and make an educated choice on which fits your situation the best

Yeah I'm sure the $40 is no where close to covering her actual spend

Your mom needs to file under your dads SS. And there are Medicare advantage plans she could get if she has part A and part B. These plans come with Medicare part D for subscriptions also. My wife and I both have Humana Gold Plus and mine is free every month and I pay almost $9.00 a month for hers because we didn't take the part D when it was first offered.

This is one fricked up ignorant statement. Some of you need to learn how insurance works. You aren't subsidizing a damn thing dumbass. Get a clue.

My Dad left my mom well off. My mom is very tight and was fussing about having to pay the new monthly premium. Thank you everyone for your comments
