The day after the marathon in November, both the governor and the M.T.A. put out a news release citing those higher ridership numbers: “Marathon runners and spectators alike took the subway to Sunday’s race, accounting for 2,304,683 paid rides, the highest for a Sunday in almost four years,” it read.

There are a lot of people on the Union payroll to collect tolls or operate the EZ Pass system.


There are also some subsidies that are probably going to Subway service.

Wikipedia says ~200,000 crossings per day with a toll of over $6. I doubt that's accurate for a Sunday morning though. And the Verazzanno is right at the start line, so it can reopen almost immediately after runners cross it

If everyone was being on the up and up ( ), the issue here is the money the marathon is generating for the government, isn't necessarily being appropriated to the MTA.

So I imagine there are some fixes like the government can account for this through appropriations or the MTA can raise rates to account for the missing revenue but then that may cause further demand issues, etc.

In some respects the issue is possibly "real," but who knows what machinations are going on.

If a half million folks come to town to ride the subway, eat the food and stay in the hotels. They are spending a grand each. That’s prob what 110 bucks in taxes plus money directly to the TA. So 2.5 million in fares and 50 million in tax rev.

Yeah. Better shut that shite down

Sounds like a larger version of LSU and CATS…

It is going to happen because it is a big fricking deal but MTA is posturing for more cash because they think they have the power to get a payoff.

They should book time w the mayor and ask for recuperation then, IMO. Leave tourism alone and dont sour it. It's way too lucrative.
