When we moved up here to Jersey from Carolina, I had them plop a PODS container down in my driveway. Spent a couple weeks filling it up and then sent it to storage. When we bought the new place, I spent a week unloading it. Fairly painless process, really, if you don't mind moving stuff to your driveway and Jengaing POD contents.
Plus I sold some furniture and gave stuff away to the inlaws and the neighbors. I also had the 1-800 Got Junk people come get a bunch of shite. I think what I'm saying is we had too much crap. Use this as an opportunity to get rid of stuff you don't use, want or need.

When we moved last year we negotiated for 3 days after selling our house to stay with a rental rate after that (which we didn't use/plan to use). Made everything much easier and we moved on the 2nd or 3rd day, can't remember.
As for moving, like anything else pouring time into prep will make life easier and save you money if you're doing an hourly move. We probably dropped 300-400 bucks on bankers boxes and crates and good quality wrap/bubble wrap. Well worth it. Packed everything up room by room over two weeks or so, really only did an hour or so a day. Spend the time appropriately taping/labeling, etc. and do organization on the front end.
When I'm packing 2-3 boxes a day over 2-3 weeks while drinking a beer and listening to music, it's completely fine and non-stressful. It's almost a puzzle figuring out how to best get stuff packed and planned. When you're doing it 2-3 days before a move it's a fricking nightmare. I actually prefer the slow pack method over paying someone else pack due to the reduced time crunch. And we're typically people who will pay for convenience.

Best advice I can give: Give yourself a couple buffer days. Hire a cleaning service to deep clean the house.

close on new house 2 weeks before closing on old one
that way you have 2 weeks to move without rushing it

Rent a storage unit for a month.

If moving yourself, no beer until everything is in the new house.

I appreciate everyone's reply so far. Here is where we are leaning after yall's input.
Rent 26' Uhaul - $40/day plus mileage
Pick it up 2 days before closing
Hire movers to load uhaul
Use uhaul as packrat for a day or so and park it at families
After closing drive uhaul to new house
Hire movers to unpack uhaul
Return uhual
Also, we are going to do the slow boxing method. Will start after Monday's inspection.

Not sure if you have Bellhops in your area, but we have used them a couple times and have been really pleased.

Trying to schedule both closings on the same day if possible.
Why would you do this? Schedule the closing on your new place a week or two before so you have some time.

Maybe, you should plan on staying in a hotel the 1st night. then you can allow yourself more time to set things up over the next day or so. But boxing up all the little stuff first is obviously a good idea. good luck.

Don’t believe the guy that says a short move is easier.
