Thinking about picking up a bike to do some trail riding. Needs some recs on a mid-ish level bike. Willing to spend $500 - $700 or so.

What are the OT ballers riding?

Discovered a nice area near the house today for some riding......I can likely ride there from my house.

Look at buying used. You cam buy a very nice used bike for that budget. People buy $1500 bikes to start with and realize that mountain biking is hard and requires energy, so they only use them a few times and them sell them.

Yep definitely look at Craigslist and let go type stuff. You can pick up $2000 worth of bike for $800 or less. I used to pick bikes up, tune em up and flip a couple a month

This may be a hassle, but do you have any buddies that will let you test ride theirs? See if you really dig it or not. $1500 will get you a really nice one and you'll find yourself wanting a nicer one dad rode mine over winter break and got hooked. mom got a free one from my dads new found friends too. can't wait to go back in the summer and ride with them.

Kona hardtails aren't bad...if you are an inhuman monster like me, they make a bike for larger human riders...
I can put stress on a frame.

$700 should get you a nice entry level bike. All the top manufacturers should have one in that range. I have a Trek.

Airborne Bikes

Great bang for your buck with this company's entry level bike. You have to assemble some of it together yourself but I didn't have any trouble.

I have a FUJI Nevada. Very happy with it.

If you don't get full suspension(which may be overkill for someone starting out) get 29 inch wheels.

The big wheels make a huge difference in taking bumps.

Go with one of the big brands. Trek, Specialized, Cannondale.

Get the best bike you can because it costs more to upgrade parts than to buy them on the bike.

Also, as previous posters said, shop used. I've seen morons on craigslist practically giving away bikes because "only rode it twice but it needs new tires".

They don't know that bike tubes leak air constantly. All those bikes need is some air or new tubes that are cheap.

Jamis is the best quality budget brand out there.

Yeah there are a lot of good brands like Jamis, Kona, Giant, etc. Just steer clear of the trash from the box stores. They are cheap, heavy, and break easily. Welds and fasteners are the last thing you want to worry about when you're bombing down a mountain.

Also wanted to add that when you choose a bike brand you're only choosing the frame and customer service.

All the other components like shifters, wheels, tires, etc are made by other companies. The one main exception being Specialized.
