I'll be spending a week at this jewel of the Middle East at the end of April.

I'm mainly concerned with the whole Muslim thing, and how much Sharia law blends into daily life.

Any personal experience with Dubai?

Just stay in your hotel room the whole time. Put up a do not disturb sign on your door. Barricade your door just in case. If you must leave your room, wear a burka that covers all skin and be sure to memorize the Koran before you get there. They will question you in depth as you come through a lengthy immigration process.

I've been a handful of times for work. It's an awesome, if artificial, place. Have fun and see how real OT ballers live.

There are phillipino and Russian hookers everywhere. If you want to go to the top of the burj kalifa schedule it ahead of time. Bring lots of money. Check for concerts by American artists that might be there during your stay. Both flo rida and snoop had concerts while I was there. Don't be an idiot and you will be fine. You're more likely to die in a wreck in a cab than have a problem with Muslims.

Just don't shine a light on anything that can be construed as illegal. Yes you can drink, there are places where it's allowed. Yes there are Muslims but being an American there isn't really a bad thing. Just don't go making out with some woman in a taxi, That'll get you in jail. Picking up a hooker and going back to the hotel won't. I played golf, went to all the malls. General sight seeing. Spend the extra coin on a gold car ticket if you're going to use the metro. It can get really crowded around rush hour with people who don't take personal hygiene very seriously.

Thanks.

My girlfriend is meeting me there, so I am curious on how conservative to be in public. Do we need to tell people we're married? I just don't trust these Sharia countries.

And I was curious about alcohol.

Hopefully I can ride a camel while I'm there.

Don't act like an arse and you will be fine. Keep all your PDA to the hotel room.

There are companies that will take you into the desert to ride camels and dune buggies.

Dubai is very liberal for a Muslim country, the Russians seem to do a lot of crazy shite over there and not get in trouble. Don't act like them.

Same here, it's why I'll never visit France or Germany.

I'd suggest telling everyone she's your sister. That way the Muslims won't harass you over her. It worked for Abraham, twice, when he ventured into Muslim countries.

just dont act the arse. you can drink in a hotel bar or your room. tell your girl to dress conservatively, otherwise the arabs will harass her if she is decent looking.

Like someone said. Keep PDA in hotel. All it takes is one "offended" taxi driver. That's the only thing. She doesn't need a hijab or anything.

It's going to be incredibly hot; can men/women wear shorts? Or is it linen pants for me?

Dubai is the outlet where Muslims go to set aside their strict religious limits on certain vices. Dubai is like Las Vegas in that everyone knows that vices are being indulged there, but they overlook the sins committed there. If you have the money, you can do just about anything there.

I have some friends who went on a girls trip to Dubai a few months ago. They had no problems whatsoever & 3/4 of them are clueless. The lone smart one gave me a good tip: don't be loud. She saw a tourist at another table get asked to leave a restaurant for telling a loud story, as we Americans tend to do.

You do realize that Abraham lived thousands of years before Islam was founded, right? Thus he never traveled through Muslim lands.

1. I'm not very interesting, but I am a man.

2. My experience is over a decade old, so it may not be accurate anymore.

3. Don't wander into Sharjah by accident (it's easy to do) and act a fool.

4. If you do risk a cab ride there, don't try to get frisky with a hooker in the backseat.

5. If you insist on doing number four, when the driver pulls over and raises hell with you, don't assault him and break the window out of his cab while drunk. If you do that, try to avoid assaulting the police officer when he shows up, and whatever you do don't slander Islam or Allah. It brings a major beatdown with it. I am pretty sure that my buddy from Houston is still in prison for that. I lost track of him after 7 years. There is only so much that can be done by contacting the American embassy. Just saying.

***I'm not fully awake yet and missed the girlfriend part. Just keep it tame in public and you should be ok.

You can only drink in the hotels. Malls are cool but nothing there that I can't find in NYC.

I recommend staying at least one night at Al Maha in the desert: it's expensive but was one of the best experiences of my life.
